The 2016 is my third Prius and for the first time, I've lost one of my smart key fobs. If I have to, I will get the dealer to replace the fob and do the programming, but before I spend the $$$, can anyone recommend a reliable non-dealer source for a replacement key? Any reason this one won't work?

No idea whether that one will work, but, I'd get a replacement sooner rather than later. I read this in the local news just a few days ago:

"... losing a single key is at least a fairly straightforward process. Your dealership will be able to clone your spare key, and make you up a new one without having to change anything inside the car. An auto locksmith can also do this for you, and often at a considerably cheaper..." ...

    BUT

"If you have lost both keys, regardless of whether it's a car remote replacement or a proximity fob, the quotes jumped from $1,800 to more than $5,000 to get a new set made. Yes, that's an ouch."

Thanks for this reply. Since I posted the question, I found this thread that seems to cover the ground pretty well. If I can source the SKS fob, I would be willing to do the dance to get the thing to work.

You realize that is a Gen 2 Prius thread.
There are no guarantees their procedure will work on a Gen 4 Prius.

BEWARE. That link specifically says: for Prius Gen II only!!!!!!!!!!
I would be very wary about trying out with a Gen 4.

With a Gen 4, they'll need to program the key using Techstream, and all keys that you want programmed to the car must be present.

Thanks for the caution! I did a broad search and did not catch the Gen II reference. Imagine how frustrating that would have been!

It gets worse (possibly). IF someone sleazy finds your lost fob and figures out what car it belongs to, goodby car! I wouldn't wait too long to get the dealer to remove that fob from the cars programming at the very least, and I would also not wait to get a replacement fob, just in case something happens to the only one you have. You do have the fob key number right? The little metal tag that came with the fobs when you bought the car?

some people lose it down along the inside edge of the seats, and can't see it, but after going back with a flashlight and checking carefully, there it is. of course, you should be able to start the car without the other fob if that's the case.

I thought I'd lost my house keys today, I put them in the white console tray and after doing a sharp braking manoeuvre they had gone over the front and rested on the tunnel. Took me ages to find them. Might also be worth a look there if anyone is getting the "key in car" message.

I think if he was trying to lock the car with another FOB inside, it wouldn't let him, warning that another FOB is inside.

I put my fob on a ring with the house keys, and a small luggage tag with my cell number and email.

I'd second bisco, intensify the search.

    Merged......

Tape cell no and email to the locking lug nut socket too. And then I got extra regular nuts, retired the lockers. That fixed 'em.

If you have locking lug nuts (that is, ones that can't be removed with a normal socket, requiring a special socket that acts as the key instead, so that it's harder to steal your wheels), Mendel is saying to tape identifying information to that socket.

If that socket goes missing, and someone finds it, your contact information will be on it, and they can get a hold of you.

Well @bhtooefr explain it pretty much. Ultimately, I just got four extra lug nuts, swapped them for the lockers. This is what I got:
