04 with weird alarms

    So my kid turns 16. I find this mint 04 with 40 k on the OD for him. We haven't been putting a bunch of miles on it since he is still learning with a permit. But I have been driving it once in a while.

    So the car is due for inspection. I take it in all is well except rear shocks need replacement (leaking) they get replaced and rear brakes get adjusted. Ok I pick up car no problems for 30-40 miles. I go on longer trip one evening about 35 miles from home Red triangle comes on with Brake warning and TPMS light on, car is running well so I figure hey probably something (sensor wire) with the recent work, I keep driving shut off car at destination, come outside start heading back home, same lights on. But about 10 miles up the road when accelerating pretty hard, power gets cut off, kind of like when traction control cuts power. But other than that everything is fine. I drive it home feathering on the power with no other issues.

    So next day I try to pull OBDII codes nothing coming up, lights still on. I clear the codes from the cheapo OBDII reader, lights go out. I drive another 10-15 miles no problems, about 15-20 miles down the road red triangle and brake warning likght come on again. I try to pull codes nothing there, I try to clear the codes nothing i do clears the lights, no codes showing just red triangle and brake light. Car seems to run fine.

    I checked all fuses, took a quick look under the car and its seems there isn't any bad fuses or sensor wires hanging unconnected.

    Any ideas what to look at next?
    Do the rear drum brakes have wear sensors?
    Do the front pads have wear sensors?
    Is my OBDII just not picking up codes?
    Could I damage anything driving it with red triangle?

    Since this is my first Prius, any one guide or manual better than another for troubleshooting assistance?

    I wonder whether the inverter pump might have failed. Oh, and cheap OBDII readers can't read all the codes on a Prius. You'd either need a Toyota dealership for that, or use some special software called Mini vci or something, to read the codes via a laptop.

    Yes I see it little movement in the flow of the coolant, however its a little movement that could easily be caused by vibration. Just went out and ran a battery check the voltage were fine. When I feel the hose leaving the pump it feels like there is movement of coolant.

    Anybody know if there is a fool proof way to check invert er pump?

    No on the iPhone, Android here.

    That’s how the working pump should look/feel. You have some other problem. You need to get the codes read. You shouldn’t drive with the warning lights on. Short trip is probably ok though. Take it to dealer or somebody with Toyota hybrid capable scanner. Or get Mini-VCI and do it yourself. Post the code(s) here.

    Yes I'm thinking the same thing from everything I have been reading. Any opinion on Amazon sellers of Mini -VCi? Will the scan gauge II pull codes reliably ?

    Any suggestions on MINI-vci, or standalone device? From researching the MINI-VCI, would need a laptop preferably running windows xp. Id rather not mess with that since all my devices are pretty new with win 10 and the latest USB 3 ports. Im pretty computer literate, would have no problem running a VM with XP in it, I would rather not and just use a standalone device that is relatively cheap. I figure till I bought an old laptop, mini-vci, configured it got it working, Id be 200-300 into it, plus time of dealing with drivers, Xp...... I just want to pull some codes now and in the future without all the drama that could come with a PC, an old operating system and what is probably hacked/pirated tech stream software.

    I bought a good Win7 32-bit laptop for $75 off Craiglist, and it lives in the garage. Add $20 for the cable and it's a versatile tool for less than the cost of one dealer diagnostic fee. I've also used it on my friends' RAV-4, Forerunner, and Camry so far. And now there are some extra twelve packs in the fridge--eventually it might pay for itself.

    So grabbed a new laptop, put a VM on it, dropped on XP played with the TiS software for about an hour to get it and the cable to work. got the following codes. Stumped, the car is running real well, HV battery charges right up to the last BAR, 12V tests fine..... just has red triangle and these codes.

    Both a HV battery code and a hybrid control error. Any suggestions???

    No, but google those codes like this will give good results:

    Toyota tech info dtc <code>

    The first ones point to hybrid battery.

    I'm no expert at this, but the block voltages all look pretty good and the codes seem to point to a cooling fan control problem.

    First thing I'd do it try an active test on the battery cooling fan with your new tool--you should be able to step through five speeds. My laptop often needs a couple of tries to get to that mode.

    Look at this wiring diagram and start troubleshooting.

    So I started looking up the codes, the only thing that seemed legit was the batt cooling fan. So I took a look at what is needed to replace the rear shocks because after that was completed, all the problems started. Looks like the fan had to be completely removed. So pull away the interior panels, I don't hear or feel the fan running, I try to change the speed via TIS, nothing. Shut it down and start looking around, find a disconnected wire on the return air vent, looks like it has sensor on the return to check flow and temp of air, I plug it in fan starts and adjusts with TIS. I clear the codes and let it run for an hour no codes come back all looks well in TIS. Ill take it for a test ride tomorrow.
