This is what I found: the 3G iPhone will work with your car's Bluetooth and download your phone book and utilize the hands-free car controls. If you plug the phone into the usb port with the adapter, it becomes just an iPod mp3 player and apparently disables the phone and will not charge it while connected.

    Phone: Iphone 3G
    Bluetooth: working
    USB charging: working
    USB integration: working
Everything still works when plugged into USB

    Device not compatible fix:
    1. Remove bluetooth connection profile from prius (phone section AND audio section)
    2. Remove bluetooth connection profile from iphone
    3. Restart iphone
    4. Plug iphone into USB and integration should work (you still have normal yes/no popup)
    5. Re-add iphone to prius (do not re-add bluetooth in audio section, just phone bluetooth)

Sadly, the airplane mode popup is here to stay, unless toyota makes a 'works with iphone' certified version. Hardware manufacturers must certify their devices and pay Apple a fee to put a Hardware authentication chip inside the device, otherwise you get the pop up.

my family just got a 2010 prius IV with navigation, and our usb port now recognizes the iphone 3GS as an iPod, after it is also paired as a phone..it will accept a charge and show playlists on the screen, although i did notice the buggy interface here (scrolling through songs selects changes whats playing)

oddly enough, we threw an 5th gen ipod classic in there and it isn't accepting a charge anymore. the prius is only a few days old, is it possible its defective? the iPod will accept a charge from other chargers (a griffin autopilot)

Just to update this thread. I have an iPhone 6 and an iPod Nano (current version). Both use lightning connectors. Both work with my Prius 2012 via BT. Neither work via USB. The USB system works with an older 30-pin iPod touch and with a thumb drive, but the newest tech from Apple's mobile devices cannot access the audio system via USB.
