center console fabric coming loose

    Hi: I noticed that the fabric covering on the center console is coming loose at the front end, just above the latch. There is not quite enough material under the plastic inside face to hold it in place. I mulled over various solutions and hit upon a very easy fix for those of you having this same problem.
    Take a small length of quarter inch diamter elastic cord cut to the width of the front lip of the cover. Tape the ends with electrical tape to keep the cord from unravelling, and stuff it up under the lip behind the clip. It will hold the edge of the fabric in place and if you stuff it in tight, it will not impede the operation of the latch.
    I was going to remove the console lid and take it into the house to work on it but I couldn'f figure out how to remove it. I took out the screws at the hinges and the two at the front end, but the plastic interior face would not come off and I was reluctant to force it. I think it would be cool to oover the console lid with a paisely print fabric for a little color. If anyone knows how to remove the cover, please post and/or email me off line. Thanks,

    Wouldn't that be something that should be covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty? I think I remember reading some posts on a prius yahoo group that this happened to some others, and their dealership fixed it under the warranty.

    I think jsarich is right, I believe I've seen it here on Priuschat. As I recall they just replaced it with a new lid.

    Before I even bought my Prius I saw a picture someone had on Priuschat where she had re-covered the center arm rest with a matching fabric and she also recoverd the door arm rests with the same fabric.

    I have the tan interior and I noticed the center console was getting dirty very quickly so I recovered it myself. I have no talent in that area and I did not use glue. I unscrewed the console, fit a piece of cloth that kind of matched and then replaced the 6 screws.

    Taking the door panels off to replace the door armrests would be a little more difficult, but easily doable. I plan on doing that in the future and then when they get dirty, I'll just take them off and wash them and then put them back on.

    So it will keep my originals brand new clean, and my side and center arm rests will always be unique to me.

    If my originals started coming off, I'd have them replaced under warranty and then ask if I can keep the old ones. For future experiments. :roll:

    Mine has also come loose, and when I brought it to the dealer's attention they ordered a new console lid for me under warrantee. (WHy they didn't just re-glue it I can't guess)

    I've seen the posts elsewhere from folks who have had the fabric come off the console. I plan to bring this to the dealer when I'm in for the next oil change. It would be nice of them to replace it, but I wonder if they really fixed the problem with it in the first place; I may end up having the same problem again in a few months. They didn't use enough material when they covered the console and there isn't sufficient fabric under the plastic to hold in place.

    Mine's in the shop right now for EL010 and they're replacing the center console lid for the same thing at the same time.

    Nice trick. Will have to save this one.

    Mine's doing same. I'm taking it in for service. Local dealer doesn't want to do my 6 month service even though I'm coming up on 6 months. I have
    a 4 mile (RT) commute so mileage is low.

    So I'll have'm replace trhe center console cover under warranty, and since they have the car anyhow... do the 6 month service. 8)

    Here's hoping they don't break anything

    they don't get paid to fix it only replace it on stuff like that. It'd probably take 45 minutes to fix it and probably only 6 minutes to change it.

    ... my wife and I have an drafting table in the office, with Borco. So, we always have a roll of Alvin double-stick tape on hand, from the local art supply. When the cloth started coming up, I applied Alvin double-sided tape, and stretched the cloth back in place. Presto chango, problem solved. Took some Oxy we use in the wash over the cloth, and it looks pretty darned good.

    Do not (NOT) use regular or conventional double-stick tape, if you please! Mind you, designed specifically for Borco, this is expensive tape - Samuel, '04 Ruthiemobile.

    Had the same problem in the 2008. Fixed it a little over three years ago, but coming loose again. My guess is they short-changed us on the fabric length. I removed mine from the car, took it apart and used a fabric spray mastic to hold it back in place. Probably took 35 minutes total to fix so I'll do it again. That seems to be the only upholstery problem in the whole interior.
