A pint a month? And an aversion to standing around in the cold and rain in inadequate clothing?

    Heresy.

You will lose your Newcastle residence permit if you're not careful.

    No.

And I can't think of a single smoker in my immediate family's circle of friends, strangely enough. That's pretty cool! Not judging here, just a realization that smoker health issues are one thing I don't have to worry about affecting those close to me. Freedom of choice for sure, though. I'm killing myself with ice cream.

So today in the rear view mirror there was a woman tailgating me in an SUV with an 'air freshener' on her dash while 'vaping' . . . sick puppy.

Mind you, I have a friend that vapes... and I actually asked her to vape in a rental car I had once.

(When I picked the rental up, it was cold, but as it warmed up, there was a faint, but unpleasant smell in the interior. Her vape was vanilla-flavored, and smells pretty nice actually. It covered the smell up for good.)

I have a friend who used vaping to quit smoking. Went from cigarettes to vaping with nicotine to non-nicotine stuff. Him and I used to always be in the back of the line while Jeeping. Most of us have no top or doors on so him with his cigarettes usually followed me with my cigar. Now I'm tailgunner and he's just in front of me, every now and then I'll catch a faint smell of berries or whatever he's vaping. I don't find it offensive at all, sort of gross when you think about you're breathing in what he exhaled but you're doing that all of the time anyways but really his vehicle exhaust is probably worse for me than his vaping is.

I truly don't know if vaping these flavored things is bad for your or not. I would expect it to be less harmful than cigarettes and without the nicotine it seems like vaping is a habit rather than an addiction. (I'm not talking about vaping hash oil, I only recently learned this was even a thing so I have no opinion on it)

You do get tiny amounts of the electrode metals inhaled with vaping, but compared to the extras added to cigarettes, the vapors likely come out ahead in terms of being safer.

An age limit is probably a good idea for vaping.

I loathe smokers with all of the passion and vehemence of someone who has had to deal with decades of secondhand smoke, butts being flicked at me while on a motorcycle, and having to fight my way through foul entrances of businesses who do not have the common sense to immediately fire employees who smoke on premises.

However (comma) I have to moderate my passions against the buttheads somewhat when it comes to vaping.
Currently....my beloved employer has no formal policy on vaping but it's only a matter of time when some smoker whines and crys enough to force them into outlawing vaping just as they did with other smokeless tobacco products.
No big loss to me as I am not currently an addict, but I hate the argument that buttheads make that just because they cannot indulge in their vile and socially harmful habit, then others with similar but not publicly damaging habits should be relegated to the same purgatory that is the smoker's break area.
    What's next?
    Chewing gum?

Vaping is a neutral ground issue for me, but the pens should probably be regulated for those under 18, or whatever local social norms dictate.
    No.
It's not going to stop the little urchins from vaping, but if it stops one or two of them from becoming a stoner....then it's all worth it.
Back when I was going to school, a lot of people eschewed smoking pot for the same reason that they didn't smoke.
    It's a pretty gross habit.
It leaves you, your clothes, your house, and especially your breath smelling like the floorboard of a NYC taxi cab.
Vaping pens take some of nasty away, and I'm a little bit concerned about more and more people exploring the wonders of cannabis through vaping.
It's fine if you're over 21, because I'm over 50 and I deeply appreciate the fact that I have more job opportunities than pharmacy-enhansed applicants - BUT - there's a lot of kids in school who will grow up without the EEEEWWW! factor that having to smoke the hemps provides as a warning label.

From a "bad habit" standpoint, the world is a little more complicated now.....but.....twas ever thus.

There was a medically oriented study conducted by the BBC within the last six months which found vaping to be potentially dangerous to the vaper (?). The risk is dependent on the flavouring, but still better than nicotine.

Smoked in high school and college to be "cool". Quit in my early 20's. Have been in health care for more than 35 years and have seen what smoking (and heavy drinking) can do. No one in my family or extended family smokes - a few drink recreationally.

Drove gas guzzlers most of my life - muscle cars, trucks. Moved to a hybrid in 2008 when gas was starting to climb to near $4. Drive prii now - don't smoke, drink, or speed (much).

I started just out of high school because of friends and family. I don't think there has been an adequate study on causation when children of parents who smoke become smokers themselves. I have seen a connection over the years. My younger sister actually got me started, but I was exposed to cigarette smoke for many years before that. I never developed a strong addiction and used, at the most, maybe 8-10 cigarettes a day. My wife also smoked, although from an earlier age and included "other than tobacco" in that mix. She now has COPD and a steadily declining respiratory function. I spent twenty years in the Air Force and have always included a fair amount of exercise in my daily activities. Long distance bicycle riding is one of my favorites. We both finally managed to quit almost three years ago now. Wife continues to suffer, limping around with supplemental oxygen, while I have little to no adverse affects. The cancer threat is always there though.

It does mean when I have a drink I really appreciate the taste of the local bitter. I don't mind standing around in the cold, I have no option when shooting landscapes at 4am. But the having the car to jump into afterwards with its heated seats is just so much better than public transport.

Ah. And there is no shortage of excellent local bitter to appreciate. Are you from the South originally?

Still, if you want to fit in with the locals, you need to stand outside happily in nothing more than a t-shirt in temperatures that are well below zero. If you're wearing long sleeves, you can't tell whether it's rain, hail, sleet or snow that's driving against your arms.

I have, as you might guess, spent many a happy night in Newcastle.

But these days, sleet is a thing of the past for me (apart from the occasional holiday). It's 38C (100 degrees for the Americans) and sunny here today.

I'm originally from Manchester or as my other half refers to it the south, lived in London for 9 years before moving up here. I think no matter what I do I'd struggle to fit in with the locals.

Would be nice to be in a warmer climate though.
