My sweet wife who could count on one hand the number of times she has bought gas concentrated too hard on the task at hand. She pulled up to the diesel pump and with great care inserted the nozzle only into the cup at the top of the neck, and filled up "Whitey." Bad move, yes! But then she got smart. The cost looked to be too high, so she did the math realizing she had paid too much, checked the receipt and sure enough there it was, "Diesel" (!!) She was smart enough to not run the car, except to pull it away from the pump. I came to her rescue, called the dealership, only for them to tell me what I was expecting. Get that baby on a rollback and to the dealership. The tank had to be replaced because of the damage the diesel did to the bladder. He needed a top end and injector cleaning. $1100.00 later he runs like a top. Toyota tech said that if she would have driven it home things would have been a much different story. I'm thankful for my wife's good sense after her honest mistake.

Up to 10% diesel is fine,
US gasoline usually includes a little right off the tap without telling you since it's perfectly legal.

Now more than 10% causes knocking and detonation. ;0

Um, diesel nozzles are a LOT larger in diameter than those for gasoline, unless the station installed the wrong specification nozzle/handle on the diesel hose, what she did *should be* impossible. If the station did have the wrong nozzle on the hose, they owe you $1100!

Somehow she managed to fill the tank only inserting the nozzle the 3 inches or so down to the hole (not into the hole) that only the gasoline nozzle goes into. Like I said, she tried way too hard!

It's not impossible -- as shown by the OP. It is just tough, as the nozzle does not fit into the filler tube properly.

But, 100s of people a year prove you can do it if distracted or not used to filling your tank as mentioned above.

The top end and injector cleaning may have been BS. My dealer tries to sell me stuff like that every time I get an oil change. But I guess better safe than sorry.

Industry standards (and in some states regulations) REQUIRE a 3/4" nominal dispenser for gasoline and 1" nominal for diesel.
