2002 prius display help please

Did you press the "ON" button, whis is the volume control that is nicely hidden behind the gear shifter while driving? What happens when you do?

 

Also, on the 2002 prius, they installed the buttons for navigation.

I have all the buttons you are mentioning, but if your car did not come with navigation the buttons are useless.

Or are you talking about the "buttons" that are on the MFD screen? If so, you have to turn the radio on. which like WHCSC mentioned to turn it on or turn up the volume, the knob is hidden behind the gear shift. if you look at it from the passenger seat, you will see it...

 

I have the EXACT same problem as blue 1748, also on 2002 Prius.
When mention of the volume, it is on the mfd, not the Radio.
Forget the Radio Volume.
If anybody got an answer or suggestions Please let me know, also does the Factory Nav under the passenger seat have to vork, to read the Mfd ? or is there a seperate computer or something for that?
Are there any fuses related to this problem that I can check?

Very few Gen1's had factory navigation installed, although all Gen1's had the buttons on the dash. When you press a navigation button the MFD should say "The External System is Not Connected". This is normal.

Yes it has factory Navigation, I also got the original window sticker stating that, I was told to replace toe nav disk under drivers seat, so I ordered an older one for a 2002 and it was exactly like the one in there, anyway I did change it but it did not do any good. I have just now tried a different MFD unit that was suppose to be working when it came out of a 2002 prius. I put it in just now and nothing different than the other one.
So now I took the box out from under the seat and it says The external system is not connected, like you said.
By the way when I took it out it had 5 female plugs on the back of the box, but only 3 wires pluged into it, I looked all over and cannot find any other wires, just on the off chance there should be more that 3 connected.
is there a way to reset the nav box? or the MFD?.If there is I would try that.
I am open for any suggestions. Thanks.

 

Are all the plugs behind the MFD (upper left area) hooked up properly? Perhaps reseat them if the MFD has been messed with. On NON NAV cars there are a couple of "plugs to nowhere". I presume these are needed for the Nav to work.

BTW, Toyota factory Nav sucks big time...you are better off with a smartphone app or buying a $100 TomTom at Target....personally I wouldn't spend more than an hour or $50 trying to fix the crappy factory Nav.

 

Yes. all the plugs are hooked up as far as I know, at least I didn't see any place else to hook up the other one, this is turning out to be a night mare. When I took out the center consul part to put in the MFD it shattered, now I got to get another center piece and still don't have it working.
I am trying to find a way to reset the whole thing, there should be a code or something on there to do it.
I know I should give up right about now, but I have read many good things about there GPS and MFD screen, and that is why I got this in the first place.
If you know of any fuse or reset feature please let me know. I bought the shop manual and it does no show anything like that, or at least I was not able to find it.
Any kind of help would be great. Thanks

Can faintly see clock at night and other button lights flicker on and off. Going to check connections tomorrow

 

If you are thinking you might remove the center finish panel tomorrow to inspect things, please notice (as you can see even above in this same thread) that people have been known to have trouble getting the panel out without breaking it.

I put together a video a while ago in the hope of improving your chances of a successful outcome. Maybe watching it could help:

I can't guarantee it still won't break (well, actually there is a standing PriusChat Scientific Proposition on it that would cover half your replacement panel cost, subject to some fine print: the other side of that bargain is to make sure you describe and video your procedure well enough that if it fails, the PriusChat community learns something more about how/why). Even if you're not up for doing the extra work to participate in the Proposition, I still hope you'll improve your odds by watching the video.

The dash was already cracked and broken before I got started and it is even more so now. Looks like there was a heater core leak and whoever repaired it probably broke it up when they removed it.

The radio must of got real wet cause it was pretty rusted out. Hoping that by replacing the radio it will fix the display issue.

Now it looks like I will need to figure something out for the busted up dash.

It's hard to find good used dash panels for Gen1s. Most are brittle from age.
New ones are available from the dealer, but cost around $200

Thanks for posting that link. Supposedly, the center dash has been discontinued by Toyota, but some of the vendors are still showing it, maybe they have it in stock. I'm going to try to get one--mine is mostly still together, but the upper right corner has been super glued together.

BTW, I've found used ones, but the Junk Yards won't ship them because they are so fragile.
