    Bad news:
I totalled my 5 month old '16 Prius in a pretty bad accident.

Good news: The outside of the car was totally destroyed after hitting another car and a wall. But my wife and I got out with bruises and a sore back.

We both feel the Prius saved our lives. A few friends are confused why we got another Prius. My answer: why wouldn't we buy another one? This one saved our lives!

When I get our property out of the car the next day, I forgot to get pictures. Pain, you know. If I can get copies from the insurance company, I might post something.

If you can't get pictures that's ok.

It's an Insurance Institute Top Pick+

Here's the report -> Vehicle details

I notice that the 2017 has a slightly better rating than the excellent rating of the 2016.

Probably because of the improved rating in the headlights (reduced the glare)

ALSO - Front Crash Protection is rated higher for 2017 - you can drill down using the sub-menu at the left. 2016 models it depends on which version of the car or which safety options are installed.

Good to hear you came through this with no severe injuries. And if you are going to wreck your car, you may as well do it so it can't be repaired. I hate repaired cars. You can't sell them, they never run right... yuck.

Car marketing teams covet the higher test ratings because they know consumers are looking at them.
As the Insurance Institute makes the tests more stringent, the vehicles get safer, and insurance claim amounts decrease. This saves lives & saves the insurance companies money.

Glad you're both ok, it just shows how good the safety features of modern cars are these days.
P.s. will the damage buff out ?

The technology looks good but I would not mind to hear some testimonial on how Gen 4 TSS-P prevents actual collisions.

My car will stop if the car in front of me stops. That's when I have DCC set. I've used it going into town, the traffic slows down and stops, my car inches up behind and stops as well. A little info message comes up in the screen to tap the accelerator to resume cruise control from a dead stop.

I had a car slow down abruptly to turn right a while back. My car stopped for that one too even though it was well clear by the time I would have been in that spot.

I have yet to prove it won't hit pedestrians ;)

Think you're gonna have to be more determined in the attack phase, Michelle.:sneaky:

How does insurance for something like this work? Do they pay you a certain amount to buy a car? Does it have to be a similar car? Does it have to be no fault of your own?

You and the insurer settle on an amount. Somehow. If you're really not happy you can contest their final offer in the courts, I think, though I've never gone there. You're free to do whatever with the check.

Even if you're at fault you can get a payout, it just impacts your future insurance status, ie: you're premiums will likely be higher, for a while. It might also decide whether or not you need to pay deductible, in the event of a repair.

Not sure about in US, but all Insurance Companies I've dealt with here have a "NEW for OLD" replacement if the car is less than either 1 or 2 years old (depending on the policy). I've only known of one person who it happened to, but they received a brand new version (slightly updated model) of the car which was totalled about 2 weeks after the accident.

My policy states "New for old replacement – less than 2 years old".

In Utah, USA, the law requires Collision coverage (To protect the bank). In the US, companies pay the "fair market value" for a private party sale, which is considerably less than the dealer price we paid, or true replacement value, unless you buy replacement insurance, usually at considerable cost. Luckily for us, I also went against my better judgement and bought "GAP" insurance, which pays off the loan, beyond the actual value of the car. We owed considerably more than replacement value.

We replaced our 2016 Prius 3 Touring with a 2016 Prius 3, less options but due to interest rates, more expensive. But, hey, we're still good. It could have been so
    much worse.
