I bought a 4' piece of foam insulation for pipes. Can be found at any big box hardware store. When the wife pop's the trunk she opens it and then sticks the foam in between the trunk and open garage door. Its a cheap and easy fix to stop the trunk from getting banged up when she's unloading groceries.

Or you could some sort of foam on the ceiling where it typically would hit. I took that approach with the trailing arm of our garage door. If and when I screw up, usually trying to close the garage door with the hatch up, it's still a catostrophe: the garage door derailed, but at least I don't get a gouge in the hatch spoiler.

i glued a piece of 4" foam to my garage door, but it wouldn't work for my wife, cause you never know where in the garage she might wind up.:p

Exactly. You need a new garage. Time to upgrade.

CaliforniaPrius - thanks for letting us know about your incident. I think it probably caused a lot of people to think about situations where their car might be vulnerable. And not just the Prime but any Prius. I have a two-car garage with plenty of clearance, but after reading this discussion I started thinking about how I sometimes park in the middle of the garage, like when rotating the tires, which puts the car underneath the control arm. Normally I wouldn't have the hatch open during this time, but just like your situation it just takes one time with a conflux of circumstances including any untimely distractions to have an unhappy day. Thanks again for the post.

Today, I went to my local grocery and accidentally parked my car too up front. Since the front bumper is low and so hit the tire stopper. Another painful experience to watch out..

I will have to touch up tomorrow... :-(

Hi-tech sensors that don't help the parking bumper issue: $100.00...

    Low-tech sensor: $7.99...

I wonder if mounting these up front might help?

It might reduce the aerodynamics though. I can't see it making the lower part of the front end any uglier.

For Red Green fans, you could always make your own...

Actually I only hit it in a very low speed and the bumper fastener clips on the right wheel came off. I have to remove all clips and reinsert them into the holes. The scratch is about 2 inches long and is visible from naked eye..
it's ugly if I don't touch it up.. I will post a few pictures later on today.

@Prius Maximus do you mean these feelers:

    upload_2017-1-1_7-24-16.png

I used those, 3 cars back, and they're effective for parallel parking, and I suppose would work for low front or rear ends as well. The only thing: ours were spring type, and they were prone to snag road junk, bits of string for example.

Now that's a car with a bumper, btw. It'd be funny if it wasn't sad, the way today's front and rear fairings continued to be described as "bumpers".

Yes, curb feelers. I remember them on my parent's car when I was a kid back in the 60's. Was really just joking, didn't intend it to be a serious suggestion. one or two of those up front would snag too many plastic shopping bags these days....

Too bad the auto parking high tech gizmo's don't do diddly with backing into the garage.

It would bee soo cool if you could get it close, push a button, and the car does the rest.

We brought home our Prius Prime tonight and noticed the same thing. The hatch opens so high that it hits the garage door when it is open and on top of the car. I wish you can adjust the opening height so that you don't have to keep worrying about opening that trunk in the garage.
