CCA correlates well with capacity, and in any case, match or exceed the OEM CCA rating.

There's third party batteries now, correct size case and post diameters. For me the rebadged Exide is cheapest, (Motomaster through Canadian Tire) is cheapest, around $189 (Can) I believe. Or the Optima, around $220 (Can). Dealerships here, about 2 years back, were asking $271 for the OEM battery.

CCA correlates closer to inversely with deep cycle capacity. When you build a high-CCA battery, you use many, thin, fragile plates to maximize surface area for the electrochemical reactions that give you cranking amps. When you build a low-cranking-amp, deep-cycle battery, you use fewer, thicker, sturdier plates. They are opposite directions in the design tradeoff.

Anyway, you really can't buy a battery with CCA low enough to be inadequate for a Prius. The OEM CCA rating is just what appears on the label of the OEM battery, it's not in the car specs, and it's just what the battery chosen as OEM (for other reasons) happens to be.

    Interesting, thanks.

My OEM had no CA or CCA rating on the label. Searching Yuasa web site I think I found the correct battery and its rating. Maybe. It was around 310 CCA IIRC, quite low.

I found purchasing an original Toyota start battery more economical than going to an aftermarket supplier, and fits properly. Most aftermarket ones are slightly taller and thinner.

Well this was the case with my 08 20 series here in Aus.

NAPA carries the auxiliary battery. It's an AGM just like the OEM. 9851P is the part number.

You could if you find one that fits, it's just a very unique size. I got an Optima from Amazon, but OEM is never a bad way to go.

In the my part of the world, the major auto parts chains offer 20% or more on online orders. Some are store pickup and others are ship to home.

Batteries are fairly heavy to ship to home, adding to the cost of ordering online.

Right, so choose it -- as suggested -- by CCA. Deep cycling is an entirely different issue.

I put the Optima yellow top in my 2009 Prius 2 years ago. I had the dealer install when I was in for an oil change. Great battery and better battery technology.

Never understood why so many were (and are) O-C over the 12V aux battery on the Prius. Does the Gen 4 have a 12V AGM battery under its bonnet?

The older Gen Prius have the battery in the passenger compartment. A flooded lead acid battery releases Hydrogen gas when charge. The OEM and Optima batteries are vented to the outside.
The Gen 4 battery under the hood does not put the passengers in danger when charging.

I'm fully aware of this (and I commented about this earlier in the thread too). The question was is the Gen 4 battery AGM or not.

Somewhat oddly, my Optima was free to ship from halfway across the country, and the tax was less as well.

Still, I'm generally averse to shipping when a local retailer has something available: just trying to reduce the energy consumption and skies filling with contrails.

Agreed. Amazon.com, for instance spreads their shipping expenses across their vast product line.

It'd be good if you could post pictures of the battery too. (y)

I'll try. I have found that posting pictures from my iPhone is hit or miss.
