i wonder if garage fires are more prevalent than house fires.

No need to get the worry beads out yet!

The guy had a Gen 4 parked in his detached garage with a block heater on a timer. It's being investigated by insurance guys from way out of state, but from the pics posted elsewhere on PC or was nothing to do with battery charging.
    .. and breathe!(y)

i figure there are less car fires than house fires, (electrical, space heaters, candles, fireplaces, Christmas trees, cigarettes and etc.) so i'll just keep charging in the attached garage.

You know, when we bought this house the one thing I really did not like was that we'd have to go outside in the cold before walking inside the house. Strangely, that's why we still have a place to live right now.

Burned out, but not down. Still don't know the full extent of the damage, but hopefully it's just new drywall, new overhead door system, and some cleaning.

I've only owned one home with the cars housed inside - 2 storey with 2 cars underneath the front living area - bedrooms at back on both floors.

The first thing I did after moving in - 2 smoke alarms - one inside the car area, and one at the doorway into the house from the car accommodation. Other than that - it was so convenient.

we have a two car attached. i think smoke alarms are a good idea, and maybe a co detector. i'm surprised they aren't required by code.

After my Prius fire the pro recommendation was to buy a heat detector (alarm), better for the garage environment.

Yeah, smoke and co detectors are only required by code in living areas and in or near sleeping areas, in my state. Heat detector over smoke detector in garage areas because you may be making smoke on purpose in the garage, or it may be steam or a mist of some kind, but that much heat in a garage is definitely a fire.

Wow! That was severe enough, but without the background info if say it was resultant from a crash rather than a battery malfunction.

It looks like a fairly severe crash - the wheels are on the top of the vehicle. Is it definitely a PRIUS?

Don't know Alan, that's what I meant about lack of background info.

Yes is a Prius , obviously as been caused by the accident.... Regarding the other self combusting while driving it seams that it starts always from under the front bonnet

If they are Gen 3 Prius they are almost exclusively NiMH batteries (except for the PiP). The electrolyte in NiMH is a solid below 500C, so any burning would have to be external, like say from the gas tank, fuel lines, fuel pump or electrical from the storage both 12V and 200V sources.

I believe Europe has had Lithium Ion batteries in the Prius liftback for quite some time. The user who posted the video is from the UK.

No, don't think so - Japan, I believe only had Li-ION. This is the EURO Owner's Manual Gen 4:
