Today when driving down the local street, I was going over 40mph to keep with the flow of traffic. A truck cut into the lane(in an inconvenient manner, but not in an unsafe manner) which forced us to slow down. Consequently, I was able to a pusle and glide behind the truck without further slowing down the flow of traffic, which I didn't mind.

Not really. While not technically "cutting me off," I dislike how everyone tends to fill in the space in front of me. If I'm coasting up to a red light that's 50 yards away, there's always a car or two (or three) that just have to stay in the gas a little longer so they can move over into my lane (ahead of me). It affects my deceleration rate.

I think I'm saving gas but causing others to waste more in their efforts to gain one or two car lengths at a red light.

As long as they do it in a manner that allows me to maintain safe
following distance, it's fine. It's when they zip in a car length
ahead and then *slow down* that I lean on the highbeams, because
they've definitely done something wrong then.

It only bothers me when I have to brake because of it. Otherwise, I don't care anymore because I'm no longer interested in staying right up on the guy's butt all the time (I used to fit that description).

Also, when people pass me angrily on a multi-lane highway, I don't care. I'm glad they passed because now they're not riding my butt getting all agrevated. Seriously, it does us both some good if they'd just pass me and get it over with.

I don't mind it if they don't create an unsafe driving condition for me by cutting in front of me. If there's plenty of room, then no problem, they can have that space (like if I'm travelling at 35-45 on a city street and the next car ahead of me is 3 or more car lengths ahead). But if they're cutting me off within inches or even a few feet of my front bumper, regardless of the speed we're travelling and the available distance in front of me, then I have a problem. Because if I have to brake hard in order to accomodate them and there's someone tailgating me who doesn't brake in time, that obviously will cause an accident and I have no desire for being rear-ended.

It disturbs me how people do not plan ahead - rather, they must cut in at the last minute. Initially they endanger themselves and me. Then, I realize, it has little to do with me - they always drive that way (regardless of road conditions and traffic), I am the one driving an efficient PZEV vehicle, that not only saves fuel, but minimizes use of brakes.

I am repeatedly amazed how people must often move from the right-hand lane, to the center lanes, then cut back to the right to make an off-ramp lane or off-ramp. All the time I am neither using brakes or accelerator. I just pray for $2.50 per Liter ($10 per gallon) fuel prices to get here sooner.

I don't care anymore. I just point an laugh. Like today I was coasting to a red light and the guy behind me wanted to get to the light before I did. I could see him yank the wheel hard when he passed. He then stopped at the light while I was still coasting. I did have to slow down because of him. He wasted gas while he made me wast energy. I could have coasted through because I have the lights timed perfectly around town. If people would just go the speed limit they would not have to stop at all.

    i don't mind.
driving slowly like i do, the driving experience has changed for me, more peaceful.
however, today, i forgot to exit, and cut off someone as i suddenly exited :( ; the other driver didn't appear to mind, gave me room to exit and i waved my thanks.
    sigh, life is good.
of course, it won't stay this way, s..t happens.
but i do thank the prius for changing my former aggresive driving behavior to behaving a lot more agreeably on the road.

Do people know what "Yield" means? I don't think so. Everyone should have to retest to renew their license. I was gliding along wonderfully, when a truck merged in front of me this morning, causing me to brake. I said some not nice words directed at the driver's intelligence.

    ...what he said.

With the added footnote if it results in putting me in some sort of real danger or threat, then it's ON.

I'm with the "breaking my stride" bunch...and of course the absolute morons who have speeded up so they can pull in front of you to turn right when getting in behind and going slower to their right hand turn would have been better for all of us!!

I do love galaxee's approach though.....sometimes I wonder (if there is a God and all that) can we go to hell for what goes on in our heads or just what we act on??????

It probably depends on the situation. If they are just going to make the next turn, they wasted gas for sure. But if they are going to continue on the same road, and can maintain a speed that is most efficient for their vehicle by being ahead of you rather than behind you, maybe overall they are saving gas.

This is not exactly on topic, but related to the saving vs. wasting of gas .... has anyone else noticed people going very, very slowly when the light turns green? I've noticed it especially in left turn lanes, where the light will remain green for only so long, and the first few cars in line proceed sloooowly through the light, the light changes, and the rest of the cars get to sit through another light cycle (and most of them burning gas while sitting).

People collectively would save more gas by simply getting through the intersection promptly - not jack-rabbit starts, but not crawling, either.

Well, there is being 'cut off' by a car that simply pulls into your lane with plenty of space, and then there is 'cut off' when one could have measured the distance between his and your car in less than 12 inches, followed by appropriate hand gestures, etc.

I don't mind the former at all. It is somewhat the norm. The latter, however, I take exception to.

I'm not sure if I'm recalling this correctly, as it's been 10 glorious years since I graduated from my uppity stuffy religious private school and I haven't looked back or had anything to do with religion since. But I think I remember reading or hearing something out of the bible that said whether you murder someone or think about murdering someone, both are seen the as the same thing in god's eyes. Or something to that effect. If that's the case, the answer to your question is probably...
