I went through a lot of science fiction as a ute. Heinlein for one. Anyone read Have Space Suit Will Travel? It was written for the teenage audience I think.

Mendel reminded me of some of those 1950-60s books about sci-fi --

Tom Mix (no wait, he was a cowboy) -- Tom Swift, I guess, I never read them. But they were popular.

I got most of my books from a used bookstore that was later shut down because they found the owner selling 8mm under-the-counter stag films to undercover officers (would have been more interested in those at 14 years of age than in the Hardy Boys or Tom Swift :ROFLMAO:).

Compared to what is out there now on the web, I presume that guy's films were pretty tame.

Asimov and Clarke as well. Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy is a must-read.

Hmm, gotta dig out those books and read them again. Never picked up on the racist tones but then again, I was a kid.

    Don't put yourself through it!

I think there were two reasons we didn't pick up on it at the time. On the one hand, yes, we were kids. But casual racism was widespread back then, too: I think there was a lot of stuff we didn't pick up on because our parents didn't pick up on it either.

Funny how society has changed in some 30-40 years.

I mentioned the used bookstore owner getting put in prison for selling 8mm stag films. I used to see his wife on the street after that (no, not hooking) and she looked so beat down, wearing ripped sweaters, etc.

When I was in my late teens/early 20s, I got seasonal jobs between college years in Nevada. I remember in those days (late 1970s) they had signs at the Nevada border warning that marijuana use resulted in a life-term in prison (that was use -- like taking one puff).

Now it is legal here in Washington (and Oregon and Colorado-- don't worry Bisco, it is coming to you soon).

The only lottery up here was under-the-table Irish Sweepstakes, until Expo 67.

At my first drafting job there was smoking in the office, IIRC.

The big legal difference in Britain between my youth and now is Sunday shopping. The rules used to be terribly complicated, I think because of that bit in the Bible where it says "And on the Seventh Day, God rested, and didst not go to any shoppes of more than 2,000 square feet outside of the period between ten of the morning and four of the afternoon, but didst go to smaller shoppes outside of that period, except for the purchase of alcohol, which he didst only do between eleven of the morning and three of the afternoon, unless he ordered hot food with the alcohol, in which case he could have it later than three, except if he was in Scotland, where he didst do no shopping at all." All that has changed now.

There are so many differences in China between now and when I first lived there it would be an enormous list. Being able to go abroad would be a big one. And there are many others which, if I were to mention them, would get this thread relegated to FHoPolitics, which would be terrible because fewer people would be able to find out about how important National Theft Search and Recovery Identity Theft Service is, and they'd just go around unknowingly having their identity ungrammatically thieved willy-nilly, which we can't be having.

The big legal difference in Australia between just before the time I was born and now is that we now legally recognise aboriginal people as people. Which really shouldn't have been a difficult one.

I do not know, just thought that'd be common historical knowledge. There were 20 casualties, 150 injured.

A Sticky Tragedy: The Boston Molasses Disaster | History Today

My son reported "the molasses was leaking", proved to be a false alarm, but then my wife started googling molasses, and found this about the molasses disaster. Doesn't rival the ammunition ship explosion in Halifax, but hey.

Almost as tragic as having one's identity stolen, eh?

Actually, my credit has been frozen for a while, I always file taxes very early and my identity is protected by my lack of financial heft....so I'm inclined to worry more about a 30-foot wall of newly liberated molasses than I am about ID theft.... :)

While on vacation in Boston, the various tour guides suggested there were indeed fatalities, but my ever diminishing grey matter no longer has any recollection of the numbers involved. I think it was recounted every time crossed the bridge from Cambridge. Two weeks isn't enough to see and hear (far less) remember the city's history. Too old now, I'd better buy a book instead.
