p3190 code and won't start

    p3190 code and won't start.
    Hi my 2010 prius stopped today whilst driving, lost power and then stopped completely and showed hybrid system fault. After stopping tried to move again but only got a few metres and tried turning off and on again but would not start. Checked fault code and it was P3190. I found another thread that mentioned this was due to low fuel while still at one bar. My fuel guage was also at one bar ( not flashing) with approx 25km to go displayed. Out some more fuel in but now won't even try to start the engine (previously it did) . The fault code has been cleared but each time it just says check hybrid system and doesn't appear to attempt to start the engine. The Hv battery would be quite low if it had been a fuel problem as it drove a little further till I assume electric power got too low. Will this prevent it from starting? If so how do I get the battery charged again?
    P3190 refers to low engine power so it may be something else , but it is not creating a new fault code, as reading now shows no fault codes.
    Doess anyone know what is going on here?
    Is this likely a fuel problem, caused by a faulty gauge, which then caused a low hv battery, which then caused it not to start after fuel was reapplied?

    How much fuel did you add? I think I read that you have to add at least 3 gallons after running out of fuel.

    AND......because you tried to stretch it so far......(BAD idea in any car)......the HV battery may have gotten low so that the converter stopped charging the 12 V battery and IT might be low now too.

    In addition to adding 5 gallons of gas, you might need to jump the 12 V for it to start again.
    And if that gets it going again, seriously consider a new 12 V battery too.

    Stretching the fuel down to the last drop might end up being an EXPENSIVE mistake.

    Too far? It had just come down to one bar from 2 and was showing 20 odd Km to go.
    The low fuel indication had not begun. At what point is it safe to refuel your car?
    In my experience and many others you would assume it is good to refuel once you get to one bar or it starts to flash.
    BTW was about 2 km from the service station to refill. It was a busy morning and was showing plenty of range for the required journey so decided to refill on the way back. Not even sure this was the problem yet, but thanks for trying the blame game. Aren't you a nice fellow?
    I added ten litres, that's around 4-5 large hats (gallons) in quaint units I believe.

    Have you checked your 12V battery? It should be in the 12.5-12.9V range. Anything 12.0V or less you may have trouble starting the car.

    It's charging now, was at 11.6 according to odb

    Nice or not, everything I said is TRUE.

    I ran out of gas once......about 55 years ago......when I trusted a gauge that was off a bit.
    Since then, I NEVER let it go below a quarter tank (about 3 bars I think) and as a result NEVER have to worry if my gauge has aged and is now off a bit. NEVER.

    12v battery has charged but still no change.
    There must be some faults generated in other ECU's I can't read with a cheap OBD device.
    The main battery was at 25% SOC so from reading that seems like it should be enough to try to start it, but it may be different on the newer generation cars. I won't know what's up till I can read it with a better tool.
    So Toyota will win this battle, but can anyone recommend a cheap hardware device that can handle all the bus speeds on the Prius and some software I can obtain free or cheaply that can get to more codes? I don't want to be in this leaky boat again ;).
    If it comes to it I can manually type in commands through a terminal program if absolutely necessary, and there is a list of them I can get hold of.

    mini vci and an old windows laptop, from what i've read here.

    how many km on her? maybe the 12v is bad, and did not take the charge. also, it's possible the hybrid battery ran too low as you suggested.

    mini vci I assume is tha adapter?
    What software do they use? or is it supplied?
    Alll my laptops run win10, is that a problem?

    right, it comes with toyota tech stream software, which will read everything. i think 10 may not work, there are threads here if you search mini vci. some are able to find an old laptop on ebay.

    Thanks, I hope so too. It seems it can run on win 10 if you stuff around getting the drivers to work.
    Also I have now ordered 2, the first was likely not firmware v2.0.4 so had to order another for more advanced stuff.

    Mini-VCI comes with Toyota Techstream software and the connector cable.

    I have version 10.10.018 running on Windows 10 with no problems.

    Kent - did you resolve this issue? I don’t need to make a new thread because what you stated, word for word, is EXACTLY what happened to me. Before I get it towed tomorrow, I would love to try and fix this myself. I’ve already tried adding 3-4 gallons of gas.
