I've got a 2013 Prius - Three. The Yokohama Avid are down to 3/32 and the dealer suggested new tires this morning.

I checked Costco and they have Michelin Defender XT ($369.96 after $70 discount) and Michelin Premier A/S ($429.96 after $70 discount). I thought they might have the Energy Saver A/S but the site said they aren't compatible with my car.

    Two questions:

    1. Am I mistaken in the belief that the Energy Saver A/S should be compatible with the 2013 Prius?

    2. Which tire should I get? Defender or Premier A/S?

    Thanks.

Interesting question. TireRack comes up with the Premier A/S and Defender, but not the Energy Saver A/S. Then I went to Tires on Line and found that the Energy Saver A/S comes in a 195/65 15H which would be compatible. Maybe Costco doesn't have that particular tire in that size or rating? Durability numbers for the Energy Saver A/S is lower than the other two tires at 400, compared to the Premier A/S with 640 and the Defender's exemplary 820. The Premier A/S does get significantly better overall ratings.

Out of those tires, I would go with the Premier, since it looks like it would be quieter and better performing in all areas compared to the Defender. If you had the 17 inch wheel size, I could highly recommend Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus for the Prius. They are a very smooth, comfortable and quiet running tire that tracks great and turned out to be really good in the wet and dry.

    Welcome to PriusChat:
For summer I have Michelin Energy Savers on the original 16" OEM wheels which came with my 2009 Gen II Prius. After last year's winter fiasco, back in October 2015 I bought a set of 15" steel rims from TireRack.com, and took advantage of my local dealer's offer Buy 3 tyres and get the 4th for $1 (all the fitting, balancing, valves, alignment-check etc. for FREE!), and after much research I went with Bridgestone Blizzaks for winter, and will swap back to the summer shoes next spring. I've found the Blizzaks to be fantastic in the rain, snow & ice this year! - but, as always YMMV! - hope this helps - Wil

I'll call Costco tomorrow and find out why they don't offer the Savers on the site and if the warehouse stocks the savers.

In case they don't offer the Savers, I'll get the Premier A/S.

    Thanks for the advice/suggestions.

I replaced my Avids with the Energy Savers on my 2011 Prius. My local Costco didn't have them in stock, but was able to order them for me.

I bought the Defenders because they are supposed to go twice as far. I lost about 2 mpg with them.

probably the best thing you can do is go to Tire Rack and read some reviews. After reading some tire information, I opted for the Continental PureContact tires. They are actually rate at the top in just about every category. They ride great, have excellent wet traction and reasonably priced. As expected, fuel economy has initially suffered a bit but is improving as the tire break in. With 1K on them they have comparable fuel economy to the stock Yokohama's.

I put the Premier tires on my '14 Prius and love them. Took about one thousand miles to really break them in, but the traction on them in snow and rain is amazing. Both of our Prii's mileage has dropped with winter grade gas. But my liftback and my husband C are both getting mid to high 40's right now. I LOVE these cars!

Both tire price went up 1 year later :)

Costo is running special on Defender XT for $446 and Premier A/S for $510 after $100 rebate.

I have had an excellent experience with the Defenders. Stay around 50-53 mpg and they've lasted me a good two years so far and still counting. I bought them because I didn't thin the Energy Savers were worth the extra $200 for a marginal change in mpg (unless I'm missing something else). Get them at Costco that warranty is sick. I blew out one tire on a curb and they only charged me a percentage of what I used based on the tread.

Good to hear. I've got a set of Defender XT's in the garage, for our son's Civic, when the snows come off. I've read the Costco Defender, with the XT suffix, is a little different. In what ways I'm not sure. I note they have the Green-X label.

Which Nokian? BTW, think they're Finland, close enuf, lol.

Yep I've had the Costco defenders for 2 years and still have good mpg. I'm a road warrior and am still getting 50 mpg. I just upgraded from a Prius 2011 II to a 2012 IV solar package and requested that they keep my tires on the IV, they thought I was crazy. Drove with the "brand new" dealership tires for a day and had 42 mpg, got my defenders put back on and it went right up to 48 mpg the next day
