If you guys weren't driving around in hybrids or all gas cars that get good mileage anyway then what would that leave? That's right Sports cars and SUVs, but sports cars are more fun.

Let's say you have $85,000 and you have to buy one sports car. What would it be? I'm curious as to what kind of speedmachines you guys like. There has to be a few enthusaists out there who daily the prius and have soemthing fun tucked away in there garage. I came here from the Rx-7 forums cause there was a link to a thread about racing the prius (I'm sure you all heard of it and it was quite funny. It seems you guys aren't big on power and kept asking "what qualifies as a performance car? speed, or mp/g?' well we had you beat there as the thread WAS about racing as this one is more about speed than anything as well. You guys seemed like you could care less about sports cars but everyone has a dream. Well enough of the long into, let's start listing.

If I had $85,000 I would import a 2002 Mazda Rx-7 RZ from Japan with low mileage ($25,000 for car $10,000 for shipping) then convert it to LHD (left hand drive) for another $8,000 or so. Then I'd order from Mazda, a 20B-REW twin turbo 3 rotor cosmo engine and swap that in ($20,000 for motor and swap). Then get a larger fuel tank and I'd be on my way. Any others out there dare to dip into the iffy subject on sports cars?

I bought a 1998 Cnevy Cavalier Z24 convertible - my first new car ever - and loved it until it was totalled April 11 this year. It was sporty, cheap, had good pickup for an econobox, and had automatic transmission, all good things for a <strike>little</strike> fat ol' lady.

My son has an RX8 with 2 baby seats in back - he justified trading in his RSX when my second grandson was on his way because it could only hold one baby seat. I think he removes 'em when he meets with other 7 and 8 owners in a regional club.

wow, you've got to be one of the first people to come over here and actually be considerate and mature.

i don't know about its performance, but i think a cayman would be lots of fun to cruise around in. a black one, of course :)

    X1.

Turns out that taking hybrids and high-mileage cars out of the equations does NOT just leave gas sports cars and SUVs. ;) You want fun? You really need torque.

For $85,000 I'd buy a very nice bicycle and several year's paid vacation. Forget the car. :)

Other than the X1, which isn't on the market yet, a 350Z Roadster with a Stillen Supercharger. I would own one right now if I didn't have kids.

1996 Nissan 300 ZX Turbo Coupe. All things considered (speed, handling, comfort), probably the best all-around sports car under $75K ever sold here. And you can get one now with normal miles on it for about $12K.

I had a red 1967 Corvette convertible 350/300, the last of the Sting Rays, bought new for $3995. It would pin you to your seat, but I barely consider it a sports car. On the worst tires you've ever seen (Uniroyal Laredos) it had all the finesse and comfort of a railroad boxcar. Its 4-wheel disc brakes would rattle every time you went over a concrete divider in the freeway.

I would like to have my 1986 Porsche 944. Moderately fast, nimble, and I managed to autocross all weekend and still get 27MPG; got up to 33MPG on the way to Willow Springs Raceway.

I was foolish and kept the Acura instead;-)

    Oh well....

wonder if anyone would take the Ariel Atom (gas version of the X1). Comes in 3 flavours - 160hp, 2xxhp and 300hp.

Tough choice... if reliability and cost of ownership weren't an issue, I'd consider:
Corvette Z06 (the C6 gets pretty good EPA mileage considering how powerful it is)
    BMW M3
    Dodge Viper
    Lotus Elise
    Porsche 911

I'll have to admit, if I had the money to blow, I would go for an Chrome Orange Metallic Lotus Exige.

Ever since I first saw an Elise, it was my dream car. Seeing the Exige, I like having the hard top better (and slightly better performance far as I can tell).

0-60 in 4.1 sec, yet still 22/29 mpg!

Second choice would be an Orange Corvette in a sports car. Slightly faster, but more expensive and worse mpg.

I try not to be an nice person to complete strangers. Aslo the other Rx-7 owners give us a bad enough rep as it is. I just love talking cars, hybrids, sports, SUV, minivans. If it has wheels and an engine I love it. I feel we all share a common intrest here why not be friends?

I got torque in the form of a 2004 Ford Mustang. Only a V-6 but 240 foot pounds of torque is nothing to laugh at.
