Reprogramming a used key fob

    Hello all,

    I recently decided to get an extra key programmed for my 05 that I drive daily since I only got 1 key when I bought it. I robbed a key fob from an 09 parts car that had the same options as mine, which included smart key. When I asked the dealer to program it for me, they said they were not completely successful. The fob will not lock or unlock the doors at all, neither manually nor "smartly". However, if I insert the key in the slot it will allow the car to start.
    I went back and compared the numbers inside the fobs. All the numbers inside the rear fob cover were exactly the same. Any idea why this dealer couldn't make my key work? They were more than happy to offer to sell me a new one for over $250, which was "guaranteed to work". I don't want to go that route, especially since I paid them about $140 to try to program my used fob.

    You could have programmed the car to start with the replacement fob in just a couple minutes. Note how that was phrased. For starting the car is programmed to accept the fob. No change happens to the fob. I have one fob that has five Prius programmed to start with it. This is to help out cheap and foolish friends that have only one working fob for their cars.

    Unlocking the doors is a different deal. For this step the fob is programmed to match the car. This makes changes in the fob that mostly can not be undone. (There are some key guru's that claim to be able to clear that programming). This is why used fobs are not completely successful. The small emergency key can be copied on to a Toy47 key blank. With that mechanical key and your partly working fob you would have a working backup for your one fob. This is how I run my two Prius with just one fob and one key.
