I am new here so don't judge me.
I recently started researching on how to convert my factory HID headlights on my Prius to a pair of LED headlights. I have not had very much luck, and the cheap ones I did buy proved to be incompatible even though the seller told me they would fit. Since then I have been trying to find out the headlight connector type on my Prius. Attached is the connector from the new LED headlights I bought, as well as the connector from the car itself. Even when I look on amazon and eBay, these same headlights show that they will fit with my car! Is there some connector I am missing? Do I have to dig deeper? Or are these headlights really incompatible with my car. I am trying to spend $50 or less (Long shot I know) on these headlights as I have already had to shell out money for 3 replacement HID headlights for my car, and from what I understand, LED's have a much longer life and are generally brighter. HELP! HID connector.jpg LED connector.jpg

I'd like to say that the LED connector replaces directly the connector pins of the light bulb, because it looks same.

I would say so as well, but as my post indicates, I have HIDs and not halogens

Then find the 12v to the High voltage HID and hook it to 12v blub then find the 12v for the high bean hook it to the blub ground the last pin to chassis it will be like 30% dimmer that why they upgrade to HID

The real Philips brand HID bulbs in my 2006 (D4R) have lasted almost 9 years now. The originals didn't make it to 2 years. There was a run of bad ones on 2006 Prius with HID. The originals were short life, but the replacements have been excellent.

Wear gloves when touching the glass or the skin oils will damage it. Better yet, just don't touch the glass.

There may be other brands than Philips that last, but I don't know any. There's a reason the Philips go for $50 each. The $15 ones use cheaper materials and it shows.

If you think $50 is steep, the original dealer price was $300 each. More than a few new owners were really pissed paying 2 X $300, plus another $250-$300 for installation. Legal action cut the price to $150 each, although dealers still insist that you have to remove the bumper and headlight assemblies for 2+ hours labor.

Here's the classic video of Luscious Garage mechanic Carolyn Coquillette replacing a bulb in 3 minutes...

I know how to replace them, and I know the price. I just want the LED headlights because they are brighter than the HIDs and they look cool and last a long time

No joy, from my research, I have found that these conversions are easy for halogen models, i am still researching but it may have to be done with diy wiring and that isn't my speciality

If you want to stay cheap buy brighter HID bulbs. Factory color is about 4300K warm color so try a 5000K or 6000K hid bulb. Higher numbers are too blue for me. Find some super cheap ebay $5 bulbs to play with different hues until you find what you like. I had green headlights at one point.

You other route is possibly going to need 1. Set of non HID Prius headlights. Your HID headlights sockets/bulb mounting area can only hold an HID bulb. Compare HID bulb D4R to 9003 of the non HID Prius. 2. A 9003 LED bulb that is plug and play. Most high powered ones suggest not using for any headlight that has a cover over the bulbs like ours. They have a heatsink on the back which gets hot. Light output may be scattered as high power led bulbs are typically only pointed two. directions on a board vs HID that spreads evenly. A projector retrofit may correct light scatter. 3. Wiring harness with fuses to be safe or at least pigtail adapters to connect power to the new style 9003 bulb. Not to mention messing with the high beam wiring.

Sweet idea and came across your post as I'm debating on swapping to LED bulbs on my 06 with standard bulbs despite the suggestions saying not to due to the back cover. Put some LED bulbs in my fog lights cause there is no back cover or gaskets and it's way brighter. There is some scatter which is OK because my headlights blend the coverage.

Are these the types of lights you are looking for? These are supposed to be LED lights for replacing D4R HID lights. I think they replace the HID light and inverter / ballast. So the LED lights plug into the 12V line which normally goes to the inverter / ballast. Some kits will have the same connector and plug into the original 12V connector, while other kits require you to splice into the original 12V line.
Some types have the current driver built-in to the base, others have a current driver in-line with the 12V cable (sometimes called a power brick).

Here are examples of a few more D4R HID to LED replacements with a range of prices.
Two have a current driver built-in to the molded backshell of the connector rather than in-line with the cable or in the base.
No endorsements are implied and the ordering does not imply any preference.

See this recent 2018 thread for a successful conversion:

It went well, except the particular LED used has a problem with FM radio interference from the current driver. So I wouldn't use that particular model.

This post might be too late for this topic, but here is a link to the step-by-step on how I converted my 2007 from HID to LED.
It was a learning process for sure, but in the end, worked out great.
