does anyone have experience or informed opinions about battery reconditioning by shops associated with the hybrid shop.

We have a 2005 Prius with 165,000 miles, bought it new, and the battery has just gone bad on us. The dealer said the codes are to replace the battery and that cell 7 is bad. Cost to replace by the dealer with a new battery is $4300, including $3600 for the battery with a 3 year warranty. Ouch. I will try to negotiate on the basis that we've been loyal customers and might move our future service if we go elsewhere for this. I'll also try the Goodwill warranty line I read about on here and see if they take pity on us.

I do want to keep this car going. It's been quite reliable otherwise with just minor stuff over the years. I'd definitely like to get over 200,000 miles on it.

We also have a local shop that is part of the hybrid shop (Toole's in San Carlos, CA) and I'm going to call them about reconditioning. Any thoughts?

And I'll also call Luscious in San Francisco to see about replacement costs new and used via them? The prices on their web site are a few years old.

I am not in a position with respect to time to do the reconditioning myself, even with the products many here use.

Any thoughts on the best approach are welcome.

If you're planning to keep it for just a couple of years, a remanufactured battery from Dorman might suit your needs. You will have to install it either by yourself or by a friend or by hiring someone. Replacing the battery is not that difficult at all. Dorman has a great video showing the steps. All you actually need are hand tools - a drill is not necessary but it will speed up the swap.

Avoid a small shop that may or may not be skilled at reconditioning these packs. Go with the big names and you're more likely to be a satisfied customer and you'll also be able to count on their warranty rather than a fly-by-night outfit that could be here today, gone tomorrow.

I think that spending your time and money to "recondition" or replace failed individual cells both are a fools errand.
The chemical processes that make the battery work have a limited lifespan.
When one fails, others are likely to soon follow.

Only those who have the skill and patience and time to tinker with individual cells themselves should consider trying to extend the life of an OLD battery. (A cell failing in a relatively new battery might be a different story.)

I would not consider a "rebuilt" battery unless the company has a good reputation AND all the cells have been replaced.
This essentially gives you a new battery in an old "frame".

More and more companies are getting into this arena......at MUCH better prices than Toyota.
I wish you luck in find one of them close by.

The only modules that are replaced by a reputable rebuilder are those below 7V and those with insufficient capacity or excessive self discharge. The rest are rebalanced and installed in the remanufactured pack again.

This statement doesn't make any sense. 28 new modules in a used case with a used battery ECU is not "rebuilt" It is for all practical purposes a new battery since Toyota sells new packs that don't have all of the components supplied - the purchaser must reuse components from the failed pack with the new modules. Toyota does NOT sell a completely new HV pack unless you buy the rest of the car with it.

Thanks for all of the ideas. We made lots of progress today. I have quotes from $3300 to $3500 to install new batteries and the Toyota goodwill warranty folks are looking into our case. So we've saved a thousand so far and maybe we will get some partial coverage. All shops we have talked to are well established.

The reconditioning place recommended a new battery in this case. Maybe our battery is just too old to be worth trying reconditioning and it is too likely other cells would fail soon. Reconditioning would be $2000 and 10 days if we went that route, warranty would be 1-year. They also have seen problems with a few brands of rebuilt batteries. Not sure if he mentioned Dorman as he was going fast.

Luscious garage in SF does rebuild batteries with all new cells. They get the cells from new gen 1 batteries. The gen 1 has more cells so they can save a bit by buying the cells that way. But it is only 600 less to get them to do a rebuild. And the Toyota new batteries now carry a 3-year warranty. So, that has upped their value over the past 1-year warranty they had. Pretty much everything else we have looked at is a 1-year warranty.

I will update as things progress. As my wife said today, it still seems like a new car. It would be nice to get a lot more out of it.

Luscious Garage is a great company. Highly respected. Very ethical. Environmentally friendly. Just visiting their shop is an uplifting experience.

The warranty for a battery with NEW cells is kind of a moot point. 1 year or 3 years, a battery with NEW cells will not fail in that time. It will likely last as long as the original pack of not linger.

If you decide to go with the dealer be SURE they are putting in NEW cells. California dealers have been known to put in Toyota packs with USED cells. Make sure to ask!

Skip the Hybrid shop reconditioning if you can afford a pack with NEW cells.

Just because it does not make sense to you doesn't automatically make it invalid.
It is rebuilt by virtue of the fact that all the new cells are attached (soldered?) in place and some parts of the old assembly are used.
You are right about being the equivalent of a new battery assembly but it really is not "all new" and therefore is rebuilt.

The problem IS that a dishonest person can replace just ONE cell and call it "rebuilt".

Like I said, I personally would not waste my time and money on a "rebuilt" unless it has all new cells. Too many others have had repeated problems with "partial rebuilds". You, however, can do what ever you think is right.

Today's update is that the original dealer is now about $3300, says they are completely new cells, and Toyota's goodwill warranty program is kicking in $1800. So, it is going to be about $1500, plus tax, out the door. Guess we are getting the benefit of being loyal service customers.

I'll mention this again, as this is another thread on hybrid batteries. Another option is to purchase the battery from any wrecked Gen 3 and install the battery modules into your pack. The 28 modules are mounted in a clamp system almost identical to the gen 2. The only difference is the two fiberglass end pieces on the Gen 3 have an extra tab on top. I just did my battery for a 2007 I bought. Cost me 600 bucks for a complete battery from a wrecked car. No core required. All the modules tested >6000 mah capacity. Buy it from a wreck and testing is probably not even required. Previously did my sons car using (2) 2013 prius C batteries (20 modules each) and sold the other 12 on ebay for 40 bucks each. Craigslist always has someone parting out wrecks. Id imagine Cali has plenty. The original 28 modules from the 2007 look to have at least 23 good modules, but testing will determine the exact quality. Thirty bucks each on ebay and now the gen 3 battery is paid for.

In my region a Gen 3 battery from the wrecking yard is $1,300.

    Core is required.

    Eric,

That's because most wrecking yards think their **** is made of gold, but sometimes you get lucky. Craigslist is full of people who parts cars out, they don't want cores. CL is the way to go. I've bought a lot of batteries, and currently have quite a selection, including a Gen 1 factory replacement that was manufactured in 2015.

The same day my son and I went to look at the 2007 I just bought, we saw a new salvage yard I had never visited. We swung in on the way back and spent a few hours looking around. They had a 2005 prius there. I started BSing with the yard owner talking about the car we had just looked at and that it needed a new battery. He told me I could have the battery from the 05 for $300 if I pulled it myself. that's why I always carry a tool bag and cash in the car. An hour later we're at the hardy's eating lunch with a 05 battery in the back of the Santa Fe we drove. That battery is on my bench right now undergoing testing. So far it looks like over 15 modules will test >6000mah capacity and ~10 will be between 5400-5999 mah.

I think you should grab that offer quickly.
Make sure that it will have the "standard" 3 year warranty for a replacement battery.
Also make sure that they guarantee that the battery is ALL that is needed to fix the problem.
It would be a shame if $1000 in additional work was needed after the new battery went in.

That's because wrecking yards have contracts from large recyclers already. So all their cores could easily be pre-sold.

Just have a pallet there and once it is filled with 10 cores recycler comes and gets it and the wrecking yard gets paid.

We did go for the deal from Toyota. And now the dealer says that the company is paying for the whole battery and we are paying $642 plus tax for labor. That works for me. I'll post again when I pick it up Thursday or Friday.

Lots of good ideas in this thread for times when Toyota is not so generous.

Final update. High initial price was due to the parts department including the core fee. So, our dealer's actual pricing was $2600 for the battery and $642 for labor. Toyota's goodwill warranty department did pay for the entire battery and we were out the door for $642. Car is running great.

We're grateful to Priuschat. Without the forum, I would not have known about the goodwill program.

Hi Andyjm, I currently have a failing battery as well and I live in San Jose, CA. I'm glad to see you had such great luck with Toyota Corp covering the whole cost of your battery. I bought my 2004 prius new here is San Jose and now it has under 135k miles on it only. I too have had my prius only serviced at Toyota dealerships, and am a loyal Totoya customer and so is my family, my sister has a 2104 pricus V. I would really appreciate your help in giving me the details as to how you contacted Toyota Corp and who you dealt with. Also, which dealership had given you the $2600 quote?

Your help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. (I don't know how to send you a private conversation/email, otherwise I would have so that I can give you my contact info so that I can talk to you more). My email address is peach728@yahoo.
