Hey all! Apologies in advance for the novel and anything nonsensical I say. Bit of a stressful time currently!

Backstory on my car. It's a 2008 Prius Touring with 174k miles, purchased at 166k and immediately started having issues with it. Withing a few weeks of purchasing, I attempted to drive it about a hundred miles away in hot weather and about 30 miles out from destination, various warning lights came on including the red triangle, VSC, check engine, and hybrid system malfunction. Let the car cool off for a bit and was able to get to my destination. That night getting back the same thing happened and again I just let it cool off and finished driving.

Took it in to the dealership where they ended up throwing their hands up and said that they didn't know what was wrong (this was after plugging it in) and that it could possible be transmission related. The car was driving perfectly fine so I just continued driving and didn't take long trips. Fast forward to that same warning light situation happening along with the car dying one time (got it jumped) and the engine not engaging one time so I pulled off to the shoulder with the 12v battery quickly depleting to a lone purple bar (still managed to drive it after a bit of cooling off), I took it into a garage to get it looked at. They did a diagnostic and said it was the 12v battery so got that replaced and it was driving perfectly with the best mileage I'd gotten since first purchasing. Took it on one 300 mile total trip and had absolutely no issues. Then once again on a warm day, the same old lights came on after only 50 miles of driving it. Like every time before, I was able to drive it back after letting it cool off. Since then I just never got it looked at because I was, at the most, driving it for 10-15 miles at a time.

Now coming to the past few days. Over the past week or so I've noticed a loud humming or rotational sound coming from the front drivers side only when in motion. Volume never changed, started getting slower, if that makes sense, when braking. I've dealt with bad wheel bearings in a different Prius and this didn't sound at all similar. During the same time, I've noticed a hesitation while accelerating- not only from a full stop, but when trying to speed up getting onto the freeway.

Yesterday I was trying to accelerate up a hill from a full stop and something felt off, assumed it was just due to slick roads. Car seemed louder than usual while accelerating up the incline. I pulled into a driveway and put the car into reverse, let off the brakes, and the whole car started shaking so violently. Put it into drive, shaking stopped, coasted besides the curb and then every single warning light, some I don't think I've ever even seen, turned on, including the hybrid system malfunction. Turned the car off, let it sit for a few minutes, then when I turned it back on the car started engine and all, but would only shift into neutral. Let it cool off for about another half hour, turned it on again, engine running, heater blowing hot, still won't go into drive or reverse. Today I had it towed back to my house and tried starting it. Everything the 12v powers is turning on, but the engine/hybrid system isn't engaging and turning on. By this time I've turned the car off and on enough times that it'd typically reset the warning lights but they remain on when I attempt to start the car.

Sorry again for the novel I seem to have written, but I don't even know where to start! No need to reprimand for not taking the car in sooner, total idiot move on my part and I'll be kicking myself for ages. As a last note, after the warning lights came on post-12v replacement, I've only been getting 33-35 mpg.

    1. Check the inverter coolant reservoir when the Prius is READY. If you don't see fluid turbulence the inverter coolant pump has failed.

    2. If that is OK then get Mini VCI so you can retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes.

Sounds like you need a new inverter pump and have a bad wheel bearing
And need a new hybrid battery.

One thing you said was The 12 volt battery went down to one purple bar that's the big hybrid battery in the trunk your seeing there not the 12 volt.

Tell us about yourself are you young old man women capable of wrenching on the car computer savvy? We can recommend a course of action accordingly.

When you took it to the dealer for troubleshooting did they give you any trouble codes?

Unfortunately the car isn't going into READY. I'll post photos of the dash in a second.
I'll look into getting a Mini VCI! Thanks

The 12v was replaced a fee ago and none of the symptoms I'm experiencing now are due to the 12v!

    Thanks for the welcome earlier.
A bad hv would definitely explain the dropping mileage. I'll look into that. Do you mean test the 12v?

I'll be looking into ordering a Mini VCI as neither place I took it (dealership and garage) gave me the codes.

Forgot to mention that every time the car has thrown warning lights (apart from this most recent) has happened on the freeway at above 60mph speeds

I'm not saying the 12 volt battery is bad.

I'm saying you think the hybrid battery level on the mfd is the 12 volt battery level.
