I just took the car to the dealer, for a recurring Check Engine light, and after changing the gas cover 2 months ago, now they tell me that it needs to replace the Charcoal Canister pump and that it's over $700 in parts and $1100 overall repair. I have a 2008 Prius, bought used 18 months ago, with approx. 70k miles

This is usually caused by topping off the gas tank upon fill up which is a big no no in a Prius because it can ruin the charcoal canister. It gets gas soaked contaminated and no longer does its job and throws a DTC.

Constant clicking of the pump to get that last ounce into the tank will surely cause a Prius tank to overflow and belch back out some gas because of its cranky bladder tank which then goes back down into the recovery system ruining the canister.

Easy fix is first click off of gas pump hang it up.

And I don't know what a gas cover is do you mean the gas cap?

    1. I suggest that you ask what DTC (diagnostic trouble code) has been logged by the engine ECU.
    2. The quoted price sounds quite high and if in fact the charcoal canister needs to be replaced, you may be able to get a much lower price elsewhere.
    3. There is no such thing as a "charcoal canister pump". There is a fuel pump which is located within the fuel tank. There are no other pumps in the fuel system.

I had this exact same problem with my previous car - a Subaru impreza. I kept topping up the gas to to the max and it really screwed up the charcoal canister filter w/ check engine light going on afterwards. After diagnosing it, the error code was P0440 which was an emission related problem. Because I was broke, I didn't have extra cash to fix it. My best buddy at Toyota told me that I probably flooded the canister filter.

I kept driving it for a few months after and the check engine light finally disappeared. I thought the canister filter dried up but then low and behold, it comes back to haunt me. All of the sudden, my car smells like gas all the time from the outside and my fuel mileage drops significantly. Check engine light comes on again.

Due to this, and a host of other problems (ie. timing belt due, new tires needed etc etc), I made the decision to sell the Impreza and it is why I ended up having a Prius now. I NEVER overfill the tank now. After the click, I just remove the nozzle and leave. It was an expensive mistake on my part.

My advice to you if it is in fact the canister filter is to look for the part online. I bet the canister is only $200 elsewhere. Get a private garage to install it. Assuming the labor rate is something like 40$-$60 an hour where you live, something like this shouldn't take more than 2 hours.

    Good luck!

I have a Prius C 2013 with 120000km. My check engine light went ON and at the gas station, the pump was constantly clicking. The first garage I went to told me it was 1200$ CAN for the repair. I had to change the Canister Vent (Charcoal Canister). So, I have made some research on this website and found your article. I would like to particularly thank Grren4ever and edthefox5. I found a recycled Prius C 2015 Charcoal Canister for 200$ CAN and went to my regular garage. They replace it for 75$CAN. Thank you again for saving me money. Now, I stop fueling at first click!
