doing full maintenance on a 2008 with 157,000 miles, motor oil wasn't changed regularly but when it was it was over filled, oil pooled in intake manifold, PVC valve caked with crud, oil was jet black. spark plugs look to be original (changed them).just wondering if it would pay to use a fast flush on it or just do a few extra changes at around 2000 miles and let the crud work itself out over time..

Not a big fan of using anything to flush the engine oil since removing alot of crud at once can cause some issues, definitely prefer to just use some higher detergent oil with short change interval then switch to synthetic oil after. You can use flushes in some extreme cases but often times anything that can be a solvent to sludge will also attack the engine seals too.

There's always a pool of oil in the bottom of the throttle body.

It's part of the Atkinson cycle weirdness. They all have it. When my car was brand new it had it.
So disregard it as a symptom.

Hot Shot oil addative will do best in this scenario....do some research on your own.....I use this on all customer car's that have been abused or neglected....

Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.

You will need 2-3 oil filters before oil change..depending on buildup inside of engine....one at addative use and one more at about half cycle before oil change minimum...this addative really clean all out.....

    Can you post pictures.....
I have looked on my wife Prime with 4000 miles now...and all weaknesses people reported so far and found nothing in this nature

My next project is installing oil catch can....this is good for not just this engine but with any engine

Ed is correct, this is completely normal with regard to gen's 2 and 3 as I've verified with our '07, '10 and '11. None have been neglected and all 3 live on name brand synthetic at 5k mile OCI's. The "07 burns 16-20 ounces of oil per interval and neither gen 3 burn a detectable amount. Thus, I don't think oil burning plays much, if any role. It's possible this has somehow been designed out for gen 4 but I doubt it. When SAMPRO gets up around throttle body cleaning time mileage, I'll bet he observes the same oil pool. "Atkinson cycle weirdness" seems to be about as good an explanation as any.

All engines are mandated to have crank case recovery rooted back to combustion side.....there is way to keep this nasty staff entering intake side....oil catch can.. Not hard to do and is doing good job

It's not nasty if you use synthetic oil. My car is a good g2 test bed as I bought it new and it's lived its life on high quality oil. TB never looked nasty although I have cleaned it a few times. Each time I flushed out the inlet pipe that connected to the PCV valve and it was not bad at all. It's not like it was 50 years ago when oil was horrible and leff a burnt residue behind after 3000 mikes on a hot running motor, plus emissions regs came along and you couldn't vent the motor to the atmosphere.
Invention of Mobil 1 was a godsend back in the day.

So my point is a catch can is useless unless your running some really crappy oil and the TB is struggling with all that residue. And your bypassing emissions by lettting the pcv valve vent to the atmosphere.

Been there before, but was curious about Prime or Gen2 installs (was secretly hoping @Samprocat has a Gen2 next to the Prime).

Pictures would've told the story either way, and everyone enjoys seeing how others go about their modifications or installs.

Might end up having to blaze the Gen2 oil catch can trail. Though curious, I doubt there will be much oil/water caught in the can.
