So, I passed a newer Prius C model on the 495 this morning. It had black rims, which I assume were standard issue. It looked really good (darker tint as well). I really like the look of the black rims on Prii. Of course, I have a 2011 that has the silver alloy rims. I have reviewed the other posts about painting the rims and understand what it would take to undertake that mod. My question is, is there anyone out there that painted the rims a while ago, and if so, how are they holding up.

    Thanks,
    rp

You could try plasti-dip, just a thought. Easy and inexpensive. But I have seen rims that look like crap after they had apparently scraped the wheels parking, and it was coming off.
However, I used plasti-dip on my emblems and wheel caps and it's help up perfectly for 1-2 years so far.

Assume this is with the wheel covers off?

Personally, I prefer silver rims, think black rims look like snows, or a wheel cover flung off. Wish Toyota would stop with the covers too, but that's another story.

I thought about going the plasti-dip route, but I agree that it seems like a pain if something happens. Last night I took off one of my hubcaps and had a good look at the rim. It did not look bad. I may just make some center caps and rock those for a while.

BTW, noticed you were in Reston. I am trying to figure out tinting. I know the gen III is supposed to come tinted, but mine does not look it is. I saw you have 30% all the way around. Do you what % they put on to make it 30%? Thanks. I am considering DIY. I figure if I don't like it I can take it off.

    Mendel,
Yep, silver. I think the black looks good with red cars.

Find someone who has black wheels willing to trade with you? You know, "grass is always greener..." ;)

Personally, I prefer the silver wheels.

Starting in 2012, Toyota started painting the 15" rims (under wheel covers) black. My sense, they saw a lot of owners pulling off the wheel covers, decided to try to paint them black to make the alloys look even more unitilitarian. Owners continued to pull off the covers, started to like the blacked-out look.

I suspected if they offered customers a choice, nicely styled silver-paint rims (without covers) would be overwhelming choice.

I painted my wheels and they are holding up fine. It's all about prepping the wheels properly. If you sand them and they are clean the paint will hold up fine.

I agree. Easier said then done though.

How long ago did you paint them?

    Thanks all,

I got official Toyota center caps on amazon for $10-15. They are cheap plastic with a shiny silver finish. They fit loosely, but have not fallen off. I plastic-dipped them black and then finished with plasti-dip glossifier. I'll try to take a pic if I can remember.

(I had the $1 electric box punch out caps from home depot for a while, but these look way better.)

Tinting :). Not sure what you mean about GenIII supposed to come tinted, not to my knowledge. I originally lived in Maryland and tinted 30% all around and 60% on the windshield. My interior is the "bisque" light color. Looks good overall. It looks dark, but not so dark that cops would want to ticket me. Haven't been ticketed for the tint yet. If you have a dark interior, you may want to go with 40%. Technically 50% is the legal limit here for the front windows. Windshield is not allowed to be tinted at all except for the sunstrip (5-6" on top of windshield).

Moved to Virginia a couple years ago and first year passed safety inspection, second year rejected for the windshield tint. I was able to pay an optometrist $50 for an eye exam, and told them I have trouble with glare, just an excuse, and they gave me a note which I gave to the DMV which puts a "Sun Shading" line on my VA registration, which means I was able to pass the safety inspection with a tinted windshield.

Also I put a very light (90%) tint on my tail lights and also failed for that. But I found a shop that passed me after a couple tries.

All cars come from the factory with glass having a degree of tinting, in the glass. Different than the aftermarket tint, the plastic film applications to the inside of glass.

Factory tint is very light, trying to strike a balance between sun shielding and safety.

Oh yeah, right I forgot. It's probably 90-95% VLT from the factory I guess.
The tinter just put 30% tint on my windows. So the actual resulting VLT through the tint and the window is probably 25-28%.
Good luck doing it yourself. ;) I had it professionally done and it looks almost perfect, like factory. No bubbles.
I did put the taillight tint on myself, which comes in a sheet like window tint. Requires some skill. It's not perfect but I'm satisfied.

Thanks Mendel, that is what I meant.

Although, my understanding is the tint is more than 95%, but it sounds like you just asked them to do 30% and they added to it.

Good to know as well about the center caps. I need to get around to ordering them.

    Thanks for every ones help.
