I was browsing fuelly to see mpg averages and noticed that the two model had a significantly lower average in the 40's with a strange bell curve. Two bell curves actually. One bell curve looks normal averaging 50s while one averages in the 20s. Looking at the profiles, it looks like a person by the name of snowcracker has an average of 22mpg with 105 fill ups in the main page. I decided to click through and check out why this is. Turns out there was a time when this person has been alternating between 20 and 40 mpgs per fill up. I'm guessing this is because they aren't full fill ups and the error is averaged out with the next fill up. However this still means that this person has an extremely low average mpg compared to the majority. Looking into the first few fill ups, this person has some notes about where they are, who they are with as if they were traveling and has slept in the car once. Along with driving about 3000 miles per month and totaling 31k miles, id really like to know what they are doing to achieve this average.

Is snowcracker on Prius chat? I'd really like to know what it takes to get mpgs in the 20s-30s on the long term. Racing around hot mountains tor long term traveling with AC on? I'm so sorry for stalking. It's just efficiency curiosity.

Anything is possible - this is the 2011 FORD DIESEL FIESTA statistics:

Mine is the 51 US mpg - almost off the chart!!!

It was a lovely little sporty car, I can understand thrashing it and maybe getting 35 mpg with difficulty - but 16 mpg?

Well the name "snow cracker" to me says that this Prius is a mountain goat. My Prius is a combination mountain goat and highway queen. When it is doing goat duty, it is driving through white-out blizzard conditions up and down mountain passes. 20mpg is not uncommon. A "normal" vehicle will also get less than half the stated MPG. Our Lexus RX's generally get 8mpg to 10mpg (versus 18mpg-22mpg) when doing this same driving. My Leaf goes from being a 80-100mile vehicle to a 20-25mile vehicle.

Here is a common bit of snow. That's the Prius in the photo. When there is a good dumping of snow, the skiing is awesome.

Can you describe goat duty? How long does it take? How does snow cracker say it's a mountain goat? Does it need 3000 miles a month? Sorry Im a city kid. What is that white stuff on your car?

One occupation which can 'achieve' 20 MPG and feel wonderful doing so, is rural mail delivery.
You accelerate from a complete sop at one mail box and the rapidly decelerate at the next 50 yards away. You idle while at the box, sorting mail and then accelerate again to the next box. While you will get very low MPG in a Prius, they will be double what you got in a normal car.

No cruising, hard acceleration and braking, short trips, being at a stop is a serious fraction of your total driving experience.

Curious. ..Dont know if your Prius is low profile vehicle but mine sure is. And getting it out of a bad situation like this is as bad as getting your drunk friend to leave the bar. My car plows snow rather than drives in it. Let off the gas and your butt stops. Hahaha!!

Fuelly says he/she lives at "Phoneix, AZ" with a picture of a USA Map, and has had a recent fill (16th) with:

A list of his MPG per fill up is not consistent with the 22 MPG average posted on Fuelly that you reference. Here is a chart of all his fuel ups.

    IMG_3990.PNG

His average looks to be around 40 MPG on the chart -- but the regular pattern of ups and downs begs some other questions, too.

Either that - or he's dreaming of a White Christmas?

And lives in the Atacama Desert.

That's so strange. Why would fuelly show an average of 22mpg from this picture?

OK - so this might help. Firstly - looking at the log book, I suspect that partial fills were recorded as "FULL" - he filled every week, maybe PayDay? but often put a small amount in, with an ODO reading, a couple of days before - that's why the zig-zag appearance.

But Secondly - the fill on 28 November, when he put 628.4 GALLONS ... into a tank which holds 10 GALLONS explains a lot.

Holy cow! I missed that. That explains it!

Now how did he add that much gas? Cargo capacity is like 600 liters.
