    Hi Everyone,

I need to replace an HV Battery in a 2005 Prius. While shopping around, I found the average price was about $2000 for a replacement using a 3rd generation battery. Then I found a mobile service that offers to replace your battery for only $999. Has anyone had experience with a service like this? I talked to him for a while over the phone. He said that his batteries come from crashed 3rd generation pri, they are balanced, and he does not mix and match modules. He has 3 5 star reviews on google and a 6 month warranty on the battery. Should I go for it?

first: name the company, so people here who have had bad or good experiences can chime in.

second: go to his place of business, and make sure he has a legitimate operation that you are comfortable with.

third: there have been good and bad reviews about mobile services, sometimes they come back when there's a problem, sometimes they don't.

lastly: educate yourself on rebuilt batteries, it's always a crapshoot, and only as good as the warranty and company standing behind it. in 7 months, you could own a boat anchor, and be out $999.

That is not that unbelievable, I could do it for half price. I also don't believe for a minute this person is giving 3rd gen modules from a wreck, not mixed and matched. Sounds like people like putting this info out there cause most can't verify

It is Affordable Hybrid Batteries of Tampa.

It's a small business. He doesn't list a store front.

I've tried to educate myself the best I can. Could I possibly check his work with an OBDII?

    Thanks!

I recall a scam deal where someone advertised "Gen 3" modules, but it turned out to be something like the number three batch of Gen 2 modules. Sort of shady, as I remember. If you can get the module serial numbers, you can easily find out on line.

It's not too good to be true. It's a crapshoot. You may get lucky and the battery will last the remainder lifetime of the car. Think of it as buying a new car or buying a beater. A new car or a new battery will have warranty and most likely last you a long time. A used battery is like buying a beater because if it breaks down, it has no value whatsoever. The difference is a new car costs a whole lot more than a beater. You're getting quotes of $1000 more for a new battery.

Everything I've read thus far is, you buy new if you're not a tinkerer.

The critical question for me really is:
Will the extra ~$1k you are going to save REALLY keep you out of some dire financial straits ??
If you can actually afford the "going price" from a reputable business or dealer.......don't screw around trying to save a buck just for the fun of it.

I ended up going to Todd at Tampa Hybrids. I Definitely think it will be worth the extra $1000! Knowing the history of a replacement battery really helps, and who knows what I would have ended up with if I went with the mobile service. Thanks for the advice everyone!
