Has this happened to anyone else? My wife bought me a new ipod video 30 gig for my birthday. We've been using the Monster tape adaptor to run our current (2nd gen 20 gig, 2nd gen 4 gig mini, 1st gen 1 gig shuffle) in the Prius. When I run the new video (music only in the car) with the tape adaptor it often spikes static in the speakers and fries the Ipod (freezes and erases the battery completely).

What is going on? What do I do? We're past the 30 day return limit on the Ipod and I'm stuck for ideas. I've tried every combination of plugging it in, putting the cassette adaptor in etc.

    HELP PLEASE!

    Thank you in advance!

As I was reading your post my daughter called on her way to work. Guess what? She works for Apple at an Apple retail store. " You have a 13 day return, for 90 days after purchase you can get one issue taken care of through Apple Care (1800CALLAPPLE) or at the Apple store. You have a one year warranty. Take it to the Apple Store" She also recommends that on the higher Gig iPods you get Apple Care. She also thinks you have a hardware problem but she is not is not a "Genius". Take it from me if you have someone like my son in the family it is cheep. He should be tester for Apple. He won his iPod in the giveaway they had when they opened the University Village Store. One free iPod for every point UW dawgs football beat Stanford. I sprang for the Apple care they have replaced it 4 times. No question, just yep it's dead let me get you a new one. I think Apple had a party or something to celebrate his policy running out. Any way take the Pod in and get help, you are covered!!

The ipod is still under the regular warranty. How are you plugging it in? With the headphone out adapter? Check and make sure your volume isn't turned up to far.

I got one of these. Auto Kit It will charge your ipod and give you a line out. This is not to be confused with the headphone out. You will get a better/steady signal from that than the headphone out.

That aside, I still think you have a hardware problem with the ipod. Especially if you can use your setup with all your other ipods and this is the only one that craps out on you.

I do not won an ipod, but two friends that do have reported problems with resets and freezes. Your problem may have nothing to do with the Prius. I suggest a google search on ipod problems to get the correct story.

Take it in to the Apple store they are nice people. I am sure if you are polite and explain that 4 other iPods work and this one does not you will be in Fat City. 3 Apple stores in Seattle one near you!

Does your Prius have the AUX jack? If so you can use an audio cable from the iPod into the AUX and then play directly thru your radio that way. ... er.. once you get that iPod fixed that is.

I had the same problem with my iPOD 60GB video i.e. freeze and have to reset, songs skipping. Finally figured out that it was the iPOD software. and downgraded the software. Worked like a charm after that.
Got the instructions and previous version online.

I had a similar problem with my iPod Nano, and Apple replaced it under the 1-year warranty. I ditto the recommendation for Apple Care.
My brother had a Monster adapter for his iPod video (I know it was Monster; I don't remember if it was FM or cassette). It fried his iPod also. Based on these two incidents I'd be leary of Monster iPod adapters, although they make very good cables.
I have the Belken Auto Kit- I like it because I have the aux jack, so I only have one cable coming out of my center console to my iPod. If you don't have an aux jack, you'd still need an FM or casette adapter in addition so I'm not sure if it is worth the expense- although it does give you the line out.

If your Prius is a 2004-2005, I suggest you go with an iPod integration kit like the VIAS or DICE.
