hi Prius chat I have a 2005 Toyota Prius with 224k had the red triangle and check engine light. Came out with the code P0A90 drive motor A performance. People were telling me transmission/transaxle issue. The symptoms I had was when driving I lost power and depleted the battery. Pushed the car and left it for a hour, however after the car started and moved fine and the battery was recharging. Has anybody had these symptoms? If did what did it cost and is it worth it for me to fix? I'm just lost because the car is a great vehicle besides this problem

Hard to say what might be the actual problem without further input. Though it sounds like the 'people' might be on the right track.

Does the prius currently move in forward and reverse?

Were there any additional DTC codes thrown or just that one?

Are there any 3 digit INF's that came with that DTC P0A90 code (like a 604)?

Have you checked the Inverter coolant reservoir for signs of circulation or water movement?

When was the last time the Trans fluid was changed (if ever)?

Until you have a better idea of what is going on I would recommend against driving it, and if you must drive then accelerate slowly.

Prius does move forward and in reverse

There were no additional DTC codes

I didn't get a additional 3 numbers maybe my scanner couldn't read it correctly

I haven't checked the inverterter reservoir I actually replaced the inverter fluid about 10 k ago

Transmission fluid was changed about 5-7k mileage ago

Yep, more information is needed. There is a three-digit INF code with the DTC and you'll need Techstream to get it. Then you can begin the troubleshooting process.

Next time I'm down in the area I can scan it for you if you like.

Hi guys sorry for the late reply I had someone clear the code but the funny thing is the car is driving normal which is odd I had a friend of mine clear the code for me so I'm stuck on answer to give you all. took it in but dealer said since someone cleared the code there isn't much we can do especially since the car is driving normally and no red triangle is on or check engine light so now I'm driving the car locally since I'm stuck on what to do, is there anyway to scan it even without a check engine light on or red triangle of death?

Nope, once the codes are cleared you have to wait for them (or others) to trigger.

The "people" are correct. The most likely cause is that the transaxle needs to be replaced. You might be able to get a used unit installed by an independent for $2K or so. Lots of labor time involved.

Don't worry, the fault code will come back soon enough. When it does, it would help to have the three digit info code to narrow down the problem further, which you can obtain with Mini VCI. Or have a Toyota dealer look at the car.

Did anything in particular happen prior to this incident, for example an accident impacting the front end of the car?

Nope nothing the car is in excellent shape, been in the family since new. So far I have driven about 300 miles and no problems just yet but just like how you mentioned it will come on sooner or later. But so far I haven't ran into yet if it does I have AAA so I will tow it to Toyota, many people have also mentioned to me that it can be the inverter pump but I replaced that due to the recall, at about 150k or so now the car has close to 225,000 miles but again didn't get that three digit code so narrow it down

Priuslover408-- Have you had any further issues with the code reappearing or any further malfunction? I have the same code as you did and I'm trying to figure out the next move.

Did you ever figure out the problem? I purchased a 2005 Prius on Friday for $5000 less than 21 hours later, it broke down with this code and doing the same thing you listed. I’m furious. I suspect the seller knew this and it refusing to fix the issue. Please help!
