So today I overfilled my Gas tank by 1 gallon and when I turned my car on, the gauge did not show full, rather exactly how it was before I filled it up. I am 2 bars over half tank or 3 bars down from full tank. Should I be worried? Should I just drive around until it sorts itself out? It has gotten cooler where I live, but nothing freezing. Please help Fam!

yes. your car has a bladder. but more importantly, you probably need a new charcoal canister.

the check engine light isn't on... if the charcoal canister is bad, wouldn't the check engine light turn on? or is that not true?

no, surprisingly in the tank, no spillage. I did however force fed an extra 1 gallon.

I like an idiot thought it was okay to fill the tank an extra 1-2 gallons each time, for the past 2 years. From 1 bar on the gauge it will fill up at 7-8 gal, so I would slowly force feed it an extra 1-2 gallons. This time I force fed it an extra 1 gallon as I had over half a take of gas, 3/4 full. Now that I filled up and force fed it an extra gallon the gauge is stuck at 3/4. I know for a fact that no gasoline was spewing out of the tank and making its way down my car and to the floor. I am stumped. No check engine light either.

The pump clicked and stopped. I slowly force fed it until I saw the fuel pump at costco go up by 1 extra gallon.

not yet, I suppose I will find out once I drive around more tomorrow, hopefully it fixes itself? or the gauge continues to drop past the 3/4 mark after I have driven over 180 miles. This sucks.

HUH? If you drive it, it will need more gas. Have you experienced a gas pump with an early/broken auto shut off before?

My other vehicle sometimes does that, even when overfilling (past the first nozzle click) by just a quart. The gauge does rise, but stops a few bars short of the top.

It always sorts itself out while driving. Sometimes the gauge will rise later to catch up, sometimes it stays put until fuel burns down to the gauge level, then the gauge start dropping normally.

No worries that I have heard about, either on that model or here in PriusChat.

I have this on occasion, keep track of the miles you filled up and what the gauge. Mine suddenly decided to work one day. I over filled it like a dumb _!@# spilling over onto my foot, it was raining that day hard, felt like a idiot, but it worked! My idea is that the float may get stuck or the digital reading is somehow malfunctioning.

how long have you had her? is this the first time the gauge has acted this way? gen 2 can do a lot of strange things, and still be fine. if the gauge doesn't correct itself, i think there is a way to recalibrate.

I've had this happen previously and once the fuel level dropped low enough for the gage to pick it back up it corrected itself. (two to three times) it's only happened to me when I was topping off for a road trip and had at least a half a tank remaining.

GREAT NEWS! After I drove enough miles and the gas started to deplete, the bars started to go down. I filled up my tank today and my gauge shows full now. It sorted itself out. Lesson learned, do not force feed the tank!
