EV Mode not engaging when it should

    I think there are times where the engine is spinning without using fuel. The indicator does not see this as EV mode even though the instantaneous mileage indicators are maximum.

    Yes, I'm sure I've had times when it was silent - ie ICE not going - but the EV light wasn't on.

    Also times when this upload_2017-3-19_23-2-30.png is blank - indicating no ICE, but the EV light will be off too.

    But if you have Energy Monitor on, it'll show that the battery is powering the wheels (or regenerating) while the ICE is lazing away doing nothing.

    EV means stopping the engine... zero RPM.

    Why do you feel that is necessary, when fuel-cut can be just as efficient for short intervals?

    Yes I have confirmed this with the scan gauge, both with the injectors showing open loop and 0.00 gallons per hour. Interestingly enough that situation does not always cause the scan gauge bug where a small amount of fuel usage is reported when the engine is off.

    I've noticed no difference between Gen3/4 behavior of that indicator.

    I like that ev off @ 20 but if u coast u can run on ev @ 55+ till batts low. Indicater is all about conditions outside temp, heater & a/c controls ur right foot as well as hybrid batt charge. Im still waiting to average above 42 in my gen 4. But im driving all rural temps been averaging 35 as a high and if not for that 10 -35 mph winds

    FWIW, mine will display the EV icon when the cruise is canceled, even though the power flow display on the audio screen indicates the gas motor is off and the battery is supplying the power. It will show the EV icon with the cruise holding the speed setting, but is is not nearly as much with the cruise off.

    As mentioned above, family and friends were curious about the inner-workings of the hybrid system when the car was new. now it's old news and we have turned off those distracting displays. Now we just drive and enjoy the outstanding fuel economy. don't concern ourselves with EV or gas engine or both.

    I am able to engage EV mode at speeds up to 73 MPH. At 74 and above, engine will always kick in no matter what.

    It wouldn't be the EV Mode button - as you say it cuts out much less than 73 MPH.

    I'd suspect he's referring to either this:
    upload_2017-5-5_19-51-17.png showing that it's driving from the battery - (which it will do down hill at that speed);

    Or the EV indicator lit on this (which shows the same, but not as accurately):

    I think it's a matter of terminology - see my post #34 above. You can't select "EV Mode", but the car will use EV mode off and on. It's a hybrid, that's how it works. It gains battery power, and then under low load (gentle downhill) will drive using battery only, on a steeper hill it will regenerate - then get an incline and the ICE kicks in again.

    You can go to the "DRIVE MONITOR"

    The EV Driving Ratio will never be 0% (except for a very short trip where the ICE started immediately and never had a chance to turn off). I've seen it as low as 10% and as high as 60% in a trip.

    Done it several times, actually. Enough to determine that it's the upper limit for EV mode, as it's very consistent. Of course there is a downhill slope involved and the battery will have plenty of juice.

    If this is not generally repeatable by others, I've often wondered if the Eco might be programmed slightly different from other models, accounting for some of the MPG improvements.

    That's very likely. I bet we could all do it with a full HV battery and a long downhill slope. Most of us have to contend with the ups and downs of life and roads! ;)
