I just purchased a used 06. Do I need the owner to have it smogged so I can take a copy when I transfer the title? It was last smogged in June of last year.

This DMV page says a new SMOG cert is needed if not done in the last 90 days:
    dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm: path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/vr/smogfaq#BM2537

But this page says 'hybrid' is exempt:
    dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm: path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr32?lang=en

I had to put a space in the URL after wcm: because it kept turning into an emoji

From what I understand, Hybrids are exempt from a full smog test, they just get their computer plugged in to see if any "modifications" have been done. As for California, unless a car is totally exempt, when a car is sold, the owner must smog it. Since you are purchasing the car, the owner has to take it to a smog place because it is a transfer of sale. Since it is a Hybrid, it will get the hybrid smog treatment. The State just wants to make sure that when a person gets a car, it is legal regarding smog. I sincerely hope this helps.

Yes you need a smog certificate for a prius in California. It's no longer exempt

Yes, the car needs a smog.. anyone can do it, though CA law says the seller should supply it to the buyer. Pretty sure the law was passed to prevent sellers from dumping failed smog test vehicles onto clueless buyers .

There is no longer a copy of the smog certificate, it is transmitted electronically the DMV.

I assumed the same but this DMV page seems to contradict it. I asked the seller about smog and they saw this page as well. That page is dated Nov/16 so I would think it's up to date. I'm just worried about showing up at the DMV and being turned away.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll push on the seller.
