A light snow shower this morning. Roads were covered with a thin layer, and the afternoon temperature was about 33°F. Slick. Drove about 20 mph and mashed the brakes in a safe place. The ABS worked well. Kept me straight while the tires skidded. Mashed the go-pedal and tested the traction control and anti-skid. That worked well too, as the car went about nowhere, just made different funny noises.

The so-called All Season tires barely met my very low expectations. If we needed the Prius in snowy weather, I'd buy real winter tires. The Nokian WRG3 is a true 4-season tire, They make a 195/65-15, and that would be my tire if I didn't want to mess with winter tires. Tires are always a compromise. Treadwear, traction, rolling resistance all play against each other. Optimize one and lose on the others. New rubber compounds raise the bar, but the compromises remain.

Below 7C (45F) all seasons rubber starts to stiffen up, snow tires stay more supple and grippy. Couple that much more siping and more aggressive tread, the difference in traction increases even more.

It's tough decision, to go year 'round on an all-weather tire like the WRG3, or do the swap to dedictated snow tires on separate rims. In your shoes, having brand new OEM all-seasons wiith LRR, I'd maybe go with the latter.

If you were to live in a four-season region, you might not want to go with Nokian WRG3 tires in winter.

They may be okay for regions that do not see winter though.

As you stated; after a 'light snow' with only a thin layer at 20 mph the tires skidded.

We had about 4 inches of snow yesterday and I was out driving in the Prime right during some of the worst of it. The tires weren't great but they were better than I expected. Not much different than the Energy tires I had on the Camry Hybrid. We are considering if we want to buy Blizzarks with new wheels or just deal with these for the winter. We certainly can get rather nasty weather up in these parts (had a nice 6' snow wall next to my driveway a couple years ago), but if you go carefully these should be okay. The downside isn't so much the changing of the tires as where do I put the wheels and tires I take off for the winter?

All season tires are just a compromise.
I would allways choose real winter tires !

Today, in Socal, driving my Prime Advanced, minding my own gas mileage, when my windshield started getting blurry! Hunh, what is this? Then my Auto wipers came on! Omeegosh, is this that phenomenon, RAIN!! In California, not possible!. Well this went on for a while, and just for laughs, I gave the old girl (young girl?? after all, she is new!) a little bit of throttle (I started to say gas, but that would be inappropriate ). Well shiver me timbers and blow my nose, but those crappy, sloppy Toyo whatever model tires, suck. Actually the slip and slide!!
Michelin, I'm saving up my Social Security checks to see you again!!

Can't say about snow, but the Toyo nanoenergy tires have been only slightly less grippy in the frequent Tstorms, gravid with tornadic circulation, that occur around Ga than the Michelin Defenders i put on the Pip.

I purchased two primes and one came with Toyo and the other Bridgestone. Do they come in any other manufacturers for the US versions? I presume they're both comparable?

there's a whole thread ... i am fairly confident that they are comparable in price (for Toyota) but they're OEM tires, there are definitely better ones out there
What tires did your Prime come with?

I experienced rain for the first time in the Prime today (been almost 6 weeks), but only around town and did not experience slip/slide , but maybe cause i was out this afternoon and it had been raining rather heavily last night and most of the morning so maybe road was not that slippery anymore. But OEM tires are just what they are, best ones for Prius I ever had were Michelin A/S energy saver ...

Mine came with Dunlop ENASAVE 01 A/S.
They seem ok but certainly the ride is not as nice as my old 2002 Camry that had Pirelli Cinturato tires and new struts.
Actually the Prius ride is very nice on smooth roads, the difference is only noticeable when the roads get rough.
Will be looking for more comfortable tires when these wear out, if that exists.
