Need advice: TPMS swap out. Did I blow it?

    So my daughter had a 2012 Prius Persona and I had a 2016 Prius Gen 4, model 4. I decided to buy a Prime so I gave her my Gen 4, but she loved her 17 inch wheels so we swapped out the wheels and put the Gen 4s on the 2012 which I traded in and the Persona wheels on the Gen 4.

    We are unable to get the TPMS units to reset to the car. We have followed the instructions in the manual as well as looked it up on Youtube. Is there something I need to do to make them identifiable to the new car or are they simply different and will never pair?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    First, the TPMS transmitter IDs for the 17" wheels need to be registered in the new car.

    There are two different setup procedures for the tire pressure warning system (TPMS): registration, in which the unique transmitter ID for the transmitter inside each tire is programmed into the car’s TPMS computer (the tire pressure warning ECU, in Toyota’s terms), and initialization, in which the measured inflation pressures are stored in the TPMS computer for reference.

    Since the wheels have been changed, the initialization procedure in the Owner’s Manual won’t be successful until the registration procedure is done. Registration is more completely described in Toyota’s Repair Manual and requires a Toyota Techstream diagnostic system (or equivalent).

    Second, TPMS transmitters from a 2012 Prius might not be compatible with a 2016 Prius.

    The original transmitters for both model years were made by the same Toyota supplier (Pacific Industrial Co., Ltd.) and use the same modulation (frequency-shift keying) and carrier frequency (314.98 MHz), but my information source, test reports filed in the FCC database, does not give enough information to determine application compatibility. The encoding and framing, for example, may be different. For reference, the 2012 transmitters have current Toyota part number 42607-33011 (Pacific PMV-107J, FCC ID PAXPMV107J), and the 2016–2017 transmitters have Toyota part number 42607-52020 (Pacific PMV-C010, FCC ID PAXPMVC010).

    Here’s my advice: it sounds like you’re a good customer of the dealer, so ask them to try to register the transmitter IDs, and then repeat the initialization. If this works, you’re good to go; if not, you’ll need to have the dealer or a tire shop replace the TPMS transmitters with some that are compatible with a 2016 Prius.

    Pull the sensors and swap so that they stay with original cars? I appreciate that's kinda nuts, a lot of tire mounting/balancing, but if last resort at least should work.

    A nit: there is no 2012 Persona, the first was 2013 and then again in 2015. That's it.

    They traded in the car with the Gen 4 tires. I doubt the dealer would do that swap for free, assuming they still have the trade-in.

    You are correct sir. This was a Prius model 5 ATP with what they are calling the Persona wheels (the 17 inch chrome wide blade-turbine looking wheels). I was just trying to save some time explaining because everyone knows what the Persona wheels look like.
