My best results have been using EV Auto from the beginning, then forgetting about it.

My wife, non-hypermiler, and I've driven Prime since November for 10k+ miles. I am convinced that the reason my wife had gotten better eco scores and MPG figures in slightly beyond AER to 100-200 mile range is because of two behaviors: using up all electric range (AER) and not using pulse & glide. As Lee Jay and John1701a mentioned, Prime initially moves itself with primarily electric power when you switch to HV mode during the warm up period whether or not you are in AER (Let's say you had 3 miles of EV range left). When you continue to drive beyond the warm up period, HV system starts charging the traction battery up to the EV range you had (3 miles), essentially acting like charge-sustain mode. Now, I drive in EV mode until I use up all EV range if I am diving slightly beyond AER. Or, I switch to HV mode with EV range I need when I am driving longer distances. My eco scores and MPG figures are getting better than my wife's.
