Greetings, Fellow Prians:

I love my 2006 Red with Package #8. The aux input for my iPod works well. However, I do not alway have my iPOD with me, particularly since several PC members have cautioned against leaving it in the Prius.

Therefore, I wanted to burn several CDs to have music on the road, but when I burned several playlists from iTunes 6 (Mac OS X) on to CDs, and put them into the 6 CD changer, I was disappointed to find that the CD title and song titles would not show up.

Here is how I added titles to the CD.

Option 1) Complex Approach

a) Burn playlist from iTunes onto CD.
B) Change iTunes import preferences from ACC to mp3.
c) Import songs from burned CD to iTunes.
c) Open Toast (you have to buy it), set application to Audio CD, and copy mp3 songs to Toast window.
d) Edit CD name and track titles.
e) Burn Audio CD

(you can use this approach to burn mp3 CDs)

Option 2) Simple Approach

a) Open iTunes
B) Open Toast and set to Audio CD
c) Drag songs from iTunes to Toast
d) Edit CD name and track titles.
e) Burn Audio CD

Both approaches yield a CD that has a title and track information. Sweet!

Please let me know if you have a different approach.

P&G, baby! :D

Yo, Li'l Mo!

I'm glad to see another Mac/iPod/Prius owner here!

I think the two methods you describe are about it. iTunes tracks, when burned to CD, don't include any CD-Text info. Toast has the option to include CD-Text, and it displays on the MFD.

I've played with it just enough to confirm that it works, but, I've spent a lot of time getting 12014 tracks into my iPod, so, screw CDs! I just leave the iPod on shuffle and enjoy the mix! I've been using the Griffin Technology iTrip Auto. Much better than the original iTrip. Griffin wants $70 for it, but you can find it for much less... I've seen it for a little as $37.00. Sure, it's not as high quality audio as a CD, but it's so much fun!

Anyway, enjoy the tunes...

Thank you for the recommendation.

Here in Southern California, my experience with FM transmitters has been pretty poor. They work well when you are between populated areas, but it is impossible for me to find a free channel in the area that I live.

For that reason, I was happy to get the aux input on my Prius. This is a direct connection for my iPod to the stereo. No interference. Sweet.

I did discover that my second approach for burning CDs caused a problem when creating an audio CD that included songs downloaded from iTunes and songs downloaded from CDs. The iTunes songs did not play. That is strange. I will see if I can solve that problem...

If all the songs are mp3's, you can simply create a playlist that is within the blank cd's capacity (under 700mb), Insert the blank cd and open the blank cd's window in the finder (Mac OSX). Then highlight all the songs in said playlist, drag them onto the blank cd's window and burn. Works for me and gives me hours of music with song titles!

If your songs are not mp3's you can convert them within itunes without having to re-import. I keep my import preference for mp3 at 192 kpbs.

That's an interesting idea. I never thought of playing an MP3 CD in the Prius. I'll have to give that a try.

I do wish I had an auxiliary input, though... Does anyone know if the DICE iPod integration works with veihicles with navigation systems? I see that a newer version of the system was recently added to the PriusChat store. The old system said that it didn't work in vehicles equipped with navigation, but this new one doesn't mention that. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I knew it worked.

Don't bother if you don't have the 2006 generation stereo system. Only that system and up supports mp3 cds.

Ah, OK, I won't bother.

However, on actually reading the information a little closer, the new aux input/iPod upgrade kit does seem to work when the navigation system is present! I'm going for it and will report back later...

Oky - I found out why my second approach failed with files purchased from the Apple Music Store "Apple informed Roxio awhile back that third party applications such as Toast are no longer allowed to bypass the copy protection on iTunes Music Store Tracks. Apple has made this impossible with various updates to iTunes and QuickTime, and Toast also cannot do it since Toast 6.0.9. iTunes Music Store tracks can only be burned to audio CD with iTunes."

I am going to see if I get the same issues with mp3 files converted in iTunes.

Thanks, but...

iTunes will not convert songs downloaded from the Apple Music Store to mp3 format. It will do it with music imported from CDs.

I just burned a couple of trial CDs and will test them as soon as my wife gets back from the store with Le Prius.

You have to waste a CD, but this is how you do it.

for purchased songs, burn them onto a CD using iTunes... not as files, but music tracks - you should only be able to burn about 80 minutes worth of it on a 700 MB disc. After the CD is finished, rip them using iTunes as MP3s. You can now put it on another disc as an MP3. It's fair because you bought it, right?

I don't see the need for toast though. when I made my MP# disc, I just used iTunes straight up. I don't have Toast.

There's not even a reason to waste a CD, just buy a CD-RW so you can use and reuse it over and over for this purpose, just erase it everytime you are done.

You are correct - this is the approach that you have to use.

I am using Toast to be able to create folders to organize the songs into multiple folders on the Mp3 disk and to rename the folders and song titles so that they show up nicely on the display. I tried a small test last night and it worked.

I will report back on my more complex mp3 disk.

Thanks, Phil - I am not sure if my iMac will read and write CD-RW. For some reason, I believe it only uses CD-R. Is your experience different?

I know that you've been talking about downloaded songs on CDs, but I have a question - is there something special I have to do with my Prius so I can see track info on a commercially-purchased CD?

If the commercially purchased cd contains the track titles then you don't have to do anything, the info will appear on the screen. The problem is that very few commercial cd's have this information on them.

I make copies of my commercial cd's using a program called Nero which is capable of storing the information in the proper way for it to appear on the MFD. Nero connects to the internet to figure out the title, artist and track names and then does all the magic needed to make it happen.

Or you could use the approach that other have mentioned and 'rip' your cd to mp3 format and then the names of the mp3 file will show up on the screen. This will let you put many more songs on a cd while sacrificing some audio quality.

Trevor is right, Jeannie. The CD has to have a CD-text file on it for it to show the song list on the display. I do not know how to tell if that is on a new CD. Certainly older CDs would not have it.

If it does not show up, it is not a problem with your Prius (as long as your audio package supports it_. It is an issue with the CD. Trevor's ideas were pretty good. Hopefully, you have access to a computer and the right software.

Good luck.

Um, yes, but that solution requires an iPod.

To summarize the prior posts in this thread:

1. iTunes can burn any song to an audio CD, regardless of its format within iTunes.

2. iTunes can convert existing songs to mp3 for use on the 2006 Prius.

3. iTunes will not, however convert a protected-AAC file (a purchased song) to another format. You can cheat by burning the song to a conventional audio CD, then ripping it back into iTunes as an mp3 file.

4. To burn an mp3 CD, set the "burning" preferences to burn an mp3 CD, not an audio CD.

5. iTunes will not burn track/song names to an audio CD. Toast will, but you have to want this enough to buy Toast.

Very good summary. I just have a comment on this:<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Rick Auricchio @ Jun 28 2006, 09:47 AM) </div>
One of the MP3 CDs I have is mostly Beatles. When viewed in the MFD, I have folder list and the songs included in that folder. Actually, each folder is a Beatles album, and it contains the songs included in that album. If this is something that might interest you, I did not use iTunes to burn this, but iTunes is responsible for the organization.

I have my iTunes set to organize my songs. It will put the songs in its own folder like so:

iTunes > iTunes Music > Artist > Album Title > Songs.EXT

I just popped an empty CD on the drive, then the OS recognized it as a blank CD and opened a Finder window for it. Drag the folders you want, in my case, each album "folder" of my Beatles songs, then when you're all set, click burn.

Note: Make sure you're keeping tabs on the size of the folders you dump on the CD because your songs might be more than the CDs capacity.

Yes, if you burn a MP3 files, you'll get the song/track info; whether you burn with iTunes or Finder this is true.

For an audio CD, however, neither iTunes nor Finder will include titles.

And an Aux Input on your Prius. :)

airpolgas - good idea - that will work if the songs are already .mp3. I did not think of that. Sweet approach as long as you are happy with the song titles.

I had to shorten this one "An der schonen blauen Donau Walzer, Op. 314 ("The Blue Danube")" ;)
