I'm trying to figure out my out the door price on a Prius, either a package 1 or 3 in Southern California.

For all you new Prius Owners, can you tell me what the registration fees were for your Prius?

I figure my out the door price will be,

    MSRP from Toyota Website
    Destination Charge
Floor Mats (looks like everybody is adding this)
    Registration
    $40 Documentation Fee
    Tax.

If anybody can give me the actual out the door price in Socal, and their tax rate, that would be even better.

I just want to go in armed with as much info as possible.

    Thanks in advance!

Well, I don't remember the exact destination fee...but that is easy since you can just look on the window of the vehicle. I think the mats were around $185.

    To calculate the registration fee:
    DMV Registration Fee Calculator

I paid MSRP, but there is no guarantee of that...you just have to pit dealer's against each other (I got mine from Keyes Toyota, but told them that Toyota in Oxnard had sold one to my Aunt for MSRP (which was true).

Also be prepared to possibly accept a different color/package if you are wanting one sooner rather then later. You should also consider package 6 over packages 1 & 3 as it adds the VSC which has been proven to be an important safety feature.

    Good luck!

State sales tax is 7.25% but it is higher, by 0.5-1% or slightly more, in some counties. For example, in Los Angeles County it is 8.25%. The tax is calculated based upon the address where the car is registered, not where the dealer from whom it is purchased is located (i.e., if you live in Orange County but buy from a Los Angeles County dealer, you will pay the Orange County rate).

Don't have an invoice in front of me, but a package #8, in San Diego County (7.75% tax rate) with the floormats ($185 I think) was about 31,500 out the door. You can probably use that the estimate the % for DMV fees (I want to say it was around $200, but could be totally wrong on that).

My package 3 with the floor mats and our sales tax in Ventura County was $24,040 out the door. Can't remember the car registration fee, but I did have the floor mats and the $40 "documentation fee" (the doc fee isn't mandated by the state, like they tell you, but it IS capped at $40 ... in other states, dealers are ripping people off with $200 and $300 "doc fees").

    $23709 Car
    $45 Document preparation fee
$2019 Sales Tax (based on where you live, not on where you buy the car)
    $205 Registration
    $8.75 Tire fee

    Total $25987

There's a pdf file online with the current sales tax for all counties in CA

    Hey All,

    Thanks for the helpful info.

fshagan - How did you get $24,040 out the door on a package 3? The MSRP + destination is $23780, before tax, title, and license? Did you get the price of the car for less than MSRP? What dealer did you buy from?

    Thanks in advance!

Hmmm ... let me verify that. I got it for MSRP, and the $23,780 sounds right with the floor mats. I need to find the contract and I'll post the exact price tomorrow, with the breakdown of the costs (too late tonight to find it!)
