I made some decisions late last week. I have two Prii's and can only keep one. My first Prius is an 03, 147000 mi. and pretty pristine. Been repainted, works well, newer tires, etc. It's the one that's going away, soon.

The other one, that I dragged home from, is the one I am keeping. 200,000 mi., I've repaired what ails it, it has 4 year old batteries, straight body with lots of stone chips on the front end, good, dirty interior, but runs and drives really well. It's now officially a driveable project car. I put the new 12v battery in on Saturday, Friday went to Maico to get an estimate. Yesterday changed out the busted up front bumper cover for a nice one from the JY, $35 for it and it was almost completely removed from the car. Got a nicer set of head lights, too. Probably going to send them out for polishing, or buy a big polishing wheel for my bench grinder and do it myself. Leaving the lights out while the car is getting painted, probably take out the tail lights too.

Today I start sanding. First the front bumper cover, and then the rest of the car. And remove the sound deadening material from the trunk lid. I don't like the color much, it's silver, so I'm going to do a color change to red, or maybe yellow. I'll take some before pictures today, I guess. Why did the early (and a lot of the later) Prius's come in such drab colors?

Sorry, neglected to take the "before" pics. I took the car into Maico yesterday for paint. What was silver will soon be red metallic. There was a car there with about the same paint, and used the same process as mine will get. Looked pretty nice.

Thinking that today I'll run to the JY and turn in a core. They got an 03 out on the yard yesterday and I want to go have a look. Can't really think of anything I need, but who knows? I'll report back (especially for the locals.)

Yes, going to go get the $8 wash and wax and put it on C/L this weekend. By the local, Phoenix & Tucson, listings it will probably be priced right at $3000. Do you want me to post pics? It started it's life at Precision Toyota in Tucson and has spent it's entire life here. Not even a hint of corrosion! Wired for the Hybrid Automotive Prolong system, too.

Hey Brian, Been following your reports on the new ride...I'm the guy from Sahuarita with the '02 that you helped a few months ago with some advice on fluid changes and a few other issues. I would love to see some pics after the paint job. Also, if you don't mind my being a little nosy, how much did it set you back with Maico? I priced a rear door at your JY yesterday and it was a very reasonable $42 with core. I'm now thinking that rather get a body shop to fix it, I could just replace it and have the whole car painted at Maico also. The paint isn't that bad on the rest of the car but white isn't my favorite anyway and if you recommend the job you got, it seems like an easy upgrade.

Yesterday I got this gadget (
) from Amazon and it actually works to stream Pandora from my phone. Compared to just playing FM, this was quite the upgrade for $5 and I now think the sound system on the '02 blows away the one on my '10, which I never thought was that bad. Not sure if either was upgraded sound or just the basic but both are quite a bit better than my wife's Optima.

I will likely be putting this one on CL in the next few months also. Bought it on a whim 6 months ago or so when my wife was driving the other Prius commuting 100mi/day to Tubac for work. She never liked the Prius that much and now she's bought the Optima and we just can't justify 3 cars between us. It's a close call which one to keep but the gen 2 is a little more comfortable and also quite a bit peppier leaving a stop sign, although the '02 has fewer miles on it. (just turned 46k today) I paid $3k for the '02 and it needed a new steering rack, tires and 12v battery so it turned out to be a $5k whim. Doubt I'll get that out of it.

I picked up the 02 yesterday. It looks wonderful! Pics today, maybe. I need to polish the headlites and put them back in. It's red metallic and the flakes in the paint are very prominent and it's really shiny! No orange peel. I didn't get the cheap paint job, tho. And it was a complete color change, so they painted under the hood, door jambs, and the trunk. It's the urethane with integrated clear coat. Total, wait for it, was just under $1600. Planning on keeping this one for a while.

    I know totally irrational.

Did you look at the newest 1st gen they had, been out about a week? Tell me about it if you have a moment.

I didn't go out in the yard as my wife was along and she didn't think it sounded like fun. (Can't imagine!) I just priced the door and figured I'd stop by when I'd researched painting or body shop prices...which turned out to be $650-$800. I may call Maico today and see if they'd paint just the JY door matched to the current white and what they'd charge.

Hey, it's not that often that we get a chance to buy something we actually want for $1600...you won't regret it. Congrats!
