Excess Oil Consumption in the 3rd Gen Prius?

    Some also believe that not checking the dipstick leads to the problem;) .

    LOL! No oils "thicken up" when warming up. They "thin down" from thick to thin. You are confusing SAE winter (W) viscosity number with the regular number.

    What I was talking about is whether or not the oil has enough contamination to the point it is no longer an sae 20 rating @ operating temperature. FUEL/water/acid/oxygen can oxidize the oil causing it to become thinner over time with blowby. Oil thins out with age due to shearing and fuel contamination. Oil can thicken over time when diesel soot has mixed with the oil. Driving conditions, climate can effect all of these things. Most people here are talking about how the engine consumes more oil past it's 5k mile interval going into 10k. When I do an oil change @10k miles I notice the oil comes out considerably faster than it goes in. It almost knocks the oil plug out of fingers.
