    Hey all,

I realize this is a Prius forum but it seemed the best place on earth to ask this question. (Also, this is my first post so I apologize if I didn't follow any accepted protocols.)

I'm currently in need of a car to get me through college. I'm looking at a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE with 210,000 miles on it. I wouldn't have considered such a car with those miles but since it was a hybrid I thought that might be acceptable (along with Toyota's legendary reliability).

The battery pack was supposedly replaced a year ago, and if such turns out to be the case (obviously a huge factor), is something like this even practical or am I just asking for a lot of trouble and hefty maintenance fees down the road?

I understand the common advice of "you can't know how far a car can go unless you know exactly how it was cared for." And to be honest, I know nothing about this car except that it appears to be in great shape -- your guess is as good as mine.

So go ahead, throw your ideas out there. Worth it or not?

    Thanks in advance.

You need to find out for certain if the replacement battery is an official toyota battery or an aftermarket repaired battery. If the latter, I would avoid buying that vehicle to make it through college without major repairs.

You can enter the VIN into toyota's owners site to see what, if any, toyota dealers have done to the car. Log into Your Toyota Owners Account | Toyota Owners

Whoop! Thanks for the quick reply. I've already asked for the VIN and that's on its way. I'll definitely plug it into that tool once I get it -- thanks!

So do you think it's fair to go with my assumption that a hybrid's gas engine will last a bit more than a non-hybrid or is that more dependent on the kind of driving the car most experienced?

Yes the gas engine (ICE in hybrid speak) have an easier life in a hybrid but high miles prius engines tend to burn oil and if the owner doesn't pay attention can kill it. Don't know if the camry ICE is also a burner.

Also, that gen hycam had issues with the brake actuator that is a real expensive fix if not covered by extended recall warranty. BTDT

I can't post links yet. But from what I've found (actually on the actuator, but I'm guessing that's related), you're right, looks like I'd be out of warranty. Yikes. Technical term overload. I'd almost hope an older car would've experienced a problem like that earlier, but still good to know.
