Oil drain pan recommendation

    I noticed when draining my oil that it came out so fast that my little plastic oil drain pan with the little hole could not handle the volume of flow


    I am thinking of one of these (below) that can handle large flow of oil and yet can be sealed so it does not slosh out when you move the pan out from under the car

    This is not for everyone, it is kinda tall, but works for me. New (bulk) oil in the red container, btw:

    (A 1.25 gallon No-Spill container, with Canadian Tire's largest funnel)

    Also, if Jeep made a hybrid Wrangler I'd be all over it. Guess that's sacrilege though. (n)

    Can't see it very well
    you would have to have the car jacked up pretty high to use it?

    Yeah, that is the case.

    For lower lift to avoid splash you want something with a bit more wall. Also, just tilt the pan for the first few seconds?

    I believe in Jeep terms, they do make a hybrid: a soft top and a hard top;).

    As for a drain pan, just make sure the capacity you are draining is less than the catch pan. Taller and thinner work best. I use an old plastic 5 gallon garbage can. Some what tall and thin to avoid splashing.

    I like that oil pan from Nutzandboltz
    I worry if it would slosh when pulling it out from under the car but it looks like it has splash guards.
    The problem with my oil pan is not capacity it's the small hole that is not big enough to handle the volume of oil as it comes out of the car

    I have the 24-quart FloTool Super Duty, which drains into itself and is big enough for many uses. It has decent build quality with O-rings but I can't speak to the smaller versions more commonly in stock. It's pretty tall but fits under ramps or jack stands.

    I'm currently using the same drain pan as Maroon. That model has been problematic for me, though, in that the screw on cap is cheap and leaks. So once I finish collecting the oil, I pour it out in to a normal container for storage or transport. When using a drain pan like that one, make sure you have the vent cap off (little, light grey plug/cap in the upper left corner of Maroon's picture). This relieves air pressure in the container so the oil can drain in without splashing back out.

    I also have a roll of plastic sheeting that I lay down whenever I do an oil change, just to cover my floor from splashes. When I'm removing the oil drain plug I unscrew it with my fingers, but have it wrapped in a shop towel/rag. It protects my hands from the hot oil, but also(to a slight degree) dampens that first, explosive release of oil in to the pan.

    I had the same problem as you. My screw on cap leaked because it was cracked. I replaced it with a cap off a Rain-X windshield fluid bottle. Fits perfectly and doesn't leak!
