Hi all. I am new to the prius forums, so forgive me if this topic has already been investigated, but I found nothing on here related to this. So I recently checked my air filter, and found oil all over the air filter seal. It didn't look like there was any oil on the filter material itself, but it was all over the seal and was leaking a little down into the box. I did some research online and found it could be one of two main things. The PCV valve, or the piston rings are worn. Really hoping its not the piston rings because then the car is basically toast. One thing I should mention is that I got this car from Copart which is an online auction, so the car was sitting in the lot for a good while. Another thing to mention is that there is oil leaking somewhere around where the fuel injectors are. I changed the spark plugs, and oil when i got it so that's not of any concern. I just ordered a new PCV valve and a new air filter and should be getting that done in when they get here in two days. I'll post some pics of the leak in a few days when I take it apart for the PCV valve. What do you guys think could be the issue?

Never heard of that before on this site about oil on the filter seal and not on the medium. But oil around the fuel injectors is probably leaking from the valve cover seal above it. Loose valve cover bolts.

If the rings are bad the plugs would be oily.......you changed them were they?

What's the mileage on the car?

Now that I remember, there might have been a little bit of oil on the threads, but other than that I don't think they were too oily. Its at 129000 miles.

If oil on threads you have a bad valve cover gasket. Oil leaking into spark plug wells.and running down side of motor. Pretty obvious.

Gotcha, yeah that would make some sense. I'll have to see if a new pcv fixes the oil on the air filter issue. Might of just been there from accidentally spilling oil when filling the crankcase, but i don't get how it was around the entire seal.

I think you have a bad oil leak on the VC gasket. But a oem gasket from Toyota. Aftermarket is crap and well area will not fit perfectly.

Heres some pics of the oil leak. Also found a puddle of oil in the throttle body, not sure if that's normal? P5280375.JPG P5280376.JPG P5280380.JPG

I have the same little dab of oil in my throttle body. I believe some of that is normal due to the nature of the Atkinson cycle engine. But there is a recent thread here about installing an oil catch can to precipitate out the oil in the PCV system.

I know EXACTLY what that is! I kept taking my Prius to the same Toyota dealership every time I got an oil change including when it threw a code for the throttle body being stuck open. I read some advice about cleaning with carb cleaner due to any carbon buildup and found that exact same issue. I looked over my service riders (invoice) and they "filled 5 quarts of oil" on every oil change! Crank case is 3.9 quarts with the filter! I asked if they were lying to me about the oil or overcharging me? Turns out they were overfilling by a whole quart! $1,500.00 and a new throttle body later, it purrs like a kitten and I've had no problems since then! The excess oil drains through the PCV and dumps into the throttle body apparently. If you're not changing your own oil, I'd start there and see if extra oil is the cause.

Our previous Civic Hybrid was spec'd 3.2 liters with oil filter changed. Honda dealership routinely put in 4.0 liters. One sweet thing about our nearby dealership, even though I've never darkened their doorstep for an oil change: if you use the bulk Toyota oil, they dispense oil via a metered applicator, into large graduates. In other words, using the spec'd amount.

I've bought bulk Toyo oil from them, bring my own container, and it's always spot-on volume. The service writer looked at my container and said: "you know, this is the way to go". So, attitudes can change I think.

I wish I could get it bulk here. That would be great. Still, I found out that the dealer close to me charges only $3.95 per quart bottle of Toyota 0W20. Oil filter was cheaper than Amazon. From now on, I'm getting my oil change supplies from the local dealer.

If you've got oil on the threads, that means the valve cover gasket is already weak(brittle), from years of exposure to extreme temperatures.

Get the valve cover seals replaced, and that would solve that.

If you got some oil in the throttle assembly, I'm afraid, the engine oil capacity of 3/9L, must have being superseded. Did you over gauge the engine oil at some point in time?
