Exactly what I want to do. Was just looking on eBay for a mirror. Seems you can get them for < $50, so might be worth the project time.

i was told by several sources, including Dianne @ carson toyota, that due to the dynamic cruise control and collision detection hardware where the mirrior is located, it is at this point not possible to install a autodimming mirror.

That doesn't make a huge amount of sense because these same features are in the Advanced model which has the HomeLink mirror. If the reason is because there is are missing power cables, that I'd believe.

An aftermarket mirror does not work and wiring is not the issue here. The mirrors we have has a base which extends out lower and longer, allowing it to clear the plastic cover on the windshield. Aftermarket mirrors can be mounted, however you have to leave the plastic cover off as it will push up against it, and you may or may not get the correct view depending on your height. You would have to buy an OEM Toyota mirror from the Advanced model. I think you may be able to get the Gen 4 Prius mirror to fit (P/N 87810-0WN90) but it's $500 and but I can't confirm it without having been in a Gen 4 before.

I did a test fit before wiring anything. Mounted with cover off, I couldn't adjust it to get a correct view of the rear.

You may be able to just swap out the stock mirror's base to the aftermarket mirror. The aftermarket mirror (usually Gentex brand) is very easy to take apart (see link below). They swapped it but for a different reason. The stock mirror looks like you will have to bust the glass to get to it...but who cares, you're not going to use it again anyways. I have not taken the stock mirror base apart so not 100% sure but it looks like it can be done.

I would consider that or even cutting into the cover if i could, but regardless I couldn't get the right angle to view out the back.

The aftermarket mirror had wiring that ran through the inside of the ball pivot joints and out the end of the base (this gives it a neat look with no exposed wiring) whereas the stock mirror was solid. I wouldn't be able to swap out the base without making a hole elsewhere to run the wiring out.

Yeah some have wires run separately. In your case you will have to open that mirror up and drill a hole through the back and separate the wire out.

I installed one a few weekends ago- used ATM Mini LP taps and had no problems, although the fuse box is so low profile, I wasnt able to get the cover back on- not a big deal. I routed the wiring behind the curtain airbags in the pillars.

I bought a few on ebay to do friends cars but they backed out- If anyone wants one, $45 shipped they are yours. You can PM me here if interested.

Here is the part number for the auto-dimming mirror in the Advanced. It is expensive compared to the aftermarket versions - about $509 at discounted price. According to the website I found it on, the mirror also fits the Premium or Plus models. Is there a wiring harness in the Premium or Plus Prime that would make this "plug and play"? Here's the part: Mirror Inside - Toyota (87810-0WN90) I found the part on discountpartsmonster.com.

lx.josh...is there a connector/harness to just plug-in the stock unit from the Advance model?

There isn't. It was pretty much DIY. I ran power from the fuse box in the drivers footwell. GND, Constant 12V, and Switched 12V

Wow. I don't know how you do it. It would have driven me nuts staring at those internals without a cover. :)

So the only feature missing from the Prime Premium that I had in my '04 is this mirror, and I really liked how it worked. The $500 price is a bit daunting, but being an EE by trade, I'm not a stranger to wiring, although it surprises me that there is not a built in harness. I'll see if I can subscribe to TIS and download the Wiring diagrams... years ago I did this for the 2004 Prius and compiled them into PDFs... not sure if that's still doable, but that would provide some idea of where they are tapping.

If anyone else has done this recently, would be good to hear further comments :)

Mr. Luis, how do you test the so-called auto-dimming; the one in my Advanced doesn't seem to do anything. All I know is headlights of people behind me at night are too bright compared to performance of my old manually dimmed 2012 PIP inside rearview mirror. The inside rearview in Advanced has a "tint" which doesn't seem to change, day or night!

Easiest way for me is to shine your smarphone's LED flashlight onto the sensor in the front. Should pretty much dim instantly or in a few seconds. That's how I tested mine on the '04 a few weeks ago when I thought it was going bad. If it doesn't, probably it's not getting power and you'll want to test DC voltage to the connections with any multimeter.

Also (perhaps obvious) make sure the on/off switch is on. Mine on the '04 had a green light to indicate the auto-dimming feature was on.
