My dealer offered a Toyota 10 year or 100,000 miles service contract for $1400. I haven't checked any other.

First year of a new model, very complicated car; I will have to think about it.

My dealer said the same thing to my 2012 Prius plug-in... as did the Honda dealer did for my 2006 Civic... as did the Subaru dealer to my 2002 WRX... and last month at the Mitsubishi dealer for my 2016 Outlander. All these models were significantly new for that model year. I have no doubt they said the same thing to my dad in the 1992 Corolla I grew up with.

I'm an independent financial planner. When I bought my wife's then new 2014 Highander Limited, I was originally quoted over $3k for the 8year/125k mile extended warranty. I knew of the finance guy at the Toyota dealership near my in-laws in St. Louis, MO who was selling them for what I thought was $895. The finance guy I was working with scoffed at the price, then brought out the dealer "invoice" binder of every available extended warranty for each vehicle. The 'invoice' price for my Highlander Limited's 8/125 warranty was $1,190. I paid $1,191.

I admit that I'm not a big fan of most kind of extended warranties. However I see no reason not to spend $1,191 for 89,000 miles more of warranty (125-36)m, especially when I was shelling out $40k for the vehicle. All I need is one broken power seat motor, power lift gate motor, navigation screen, etc, and I'm home free. I'm already planning on getting the rear sub-woofer replaced for the JBL system, and that's I think around $600-$800 right there (so I've been told). When it comes to the Prius Prime, I don't plan on buying an EW immediately, but I may take time during the first 30 days to explore the option (my understanding is that you have 30 days to get one, maybe I'm wrong?).....Regardless, isn't the Prius one of the most reliable vehicles ever made?

Be careful here. Not sure if this dealer is in your state, but the word on the ToyotaNation forums was that Toyota was clamping down on phone sales of extended warranties. Not sure how they can enforce this, but it may come to be that if you want a really good deal, you may have to fly to save some cash.....

I'm having to think about this now too, my Prime will be here next week.

I got an extended "warranty" on my 2010 Prius, and about all it covered was the first 3 (or 5, I can't remember) normal maintenance (oil changes mainly). That and depreciation insurance if I remember right. I think it covered the rims too. The only repair I needed was after that and I'm still dubious as to if the dealer was spoofing me. (minor oil leak, very expensive to fix, and I saw no evidence of oil) The extended w didn't cover it.

I think I wont be getting one right away, and decide while it is still under warranty.

From some of the posts above, it seems as if some owners are confusing an extended warranty with an extended service contract.

The extended service contract / vehicle service contract (VSC) is a pre-paid maintenance contract. What you're essentially doing is pre-paying for oil changes and other maintenance items at what may be a discounted price prior to requiring the service.

As I sometimes vacillate between my dealer and my independently owned repair shop (whom I've known since 1986), I don't buy VSCs.
