    Oil changes add up, and 100k miles will include a fluid change for the transmission in most cases. There is also spark plugs, and maybe a timing belt during that period of time. Then most gassers don't have regen braking. So at least on set of rotors and shoes all around.

    Coolant is the only fluid in a BEV; it can go five years or 150k miles in a GM. We know a Prius can go over 100k miles on the original brakes, and BEVs do more regen braking.

    They seem to have missed tires though.

    you guys are thinking of the old days. our old camay's (i know, toyota again) required very little service up to the mid 100k's.

    Those aren't regular wear items on current cars.
    I know the 2005 V6 Camry required a timing belt at 90k miles. Replacing those start at $100 if you are lucky. The longest interval for spark plugs these days is 100k miles.

    The $2000 figure may sound high but it is something spread out over 7 to 10 years.

    My Leaf just crossed two years since I got it. I brought it in for "service" a year ago and they rotated the tires and said I should bring it in more often. OK, so after 6 more months I brought it in and got a minor recall service done. Again, they asked me to bring it in more often -- it's free. I just think they want more practice rotating tires and keeping the car washer full. I got 3 years free maintenance...but the car washer was broken last time in.
    When it gets dirty again I'll bring it back in again after I make sure the car wash is working.

    (PIP is now 5 years old and no maintenance except oil changes. Free oil changes have run out. So the Leaf wins so far)

    this is a complete BS. Last time I checked, even EV need new tires. The $0 figure is a lie. Also, I didn't spend $0.02/mile in my Prius. More like $0.005 (including tires).

    It just means they haven't needed to buy new tires yet, I would think.
    My PIP is 5 years old and I haven't yet needed to get new tires.

    well yes, but using this as evidence that EV cars have zero maintenance cost is a bit dishonest, isn't it?

    this was proven to be true years ago. Remember how expensive 'new' Prius traction packs were originally? Now days, there are some pretty decent rebuild shops around - that can get you out the door with a rebuilt traction pack (& warranty) for ~$1,500. & - remember how much per kWh the original volt pack was estimated to cost? Yet Gen II's (iirc) are under $175/kWh new.

    I don't think the Volt battery is that cheap. GM got a deal on the Bolt pack, but that was part of a package deal in which they buy all the drive train components from LG Chem.

    The kWh cost for Li-ion cells are likely under the value of the federal tax credit at this point though.

    Li-ion costs have made remarkable progress in cost reduction since the introduction of the Leaf and Volt.

    Toyota does have some valid reasons for sticking with NiMH in some cases, but it feels like stubbornness mostly.

    Ha - that is kind of funny. But you have to admit, with the substantial amount of 1st-generation RAV 4 EV's still running around the landscape, some w/ over 100k & 150k miles, there is at least a little bit of validity to nickel metal hydride. And with our improved knowledge of thermal management & proper use of high & low (dis)charge limits, who knows ......
    of course - they DO keep saying that the Sudbury nickel mine is a pretty toxic place
