I changed the transmission oil on my wife's 2010 Prius yesterday, but it only took a little over three quarts before fluid starting leaking from the fill plug. I closed the plug up, drove the car a bit, and checked it again, this time leveling the car to see if the angle had anything to do with it. The transmission still would not take much more fluid before dripping out. I am guessing that I somehow didn't drain the entire transmission, but I'm not sure. I know it calls for four quarts and I'm a little concerned that I'm missing something. Anyone else experience this issue? Thanks in advance for your help
Just emptied my oil container. Looks like about three quarts came out. That makes me feel a little better, but still wondering why nearly one dirty quart of fluid stayed in the transmission.
Sounds like it wasn't level when it was drained and filled. Then it was driven, leveled, checked, and a bit more fluid was added. Sound about right?
With the car level for the whole procedure I put in about 3.5 litres (maybe 3.8 quarts). If you had the car level for the second top up i would think you're good. Maybe that second top up is a bit more than you think? How much is left in the last bottle? Spec at drain and fill is not 4 qts. Forget the exact amount, it is in the Owner's Manual.
