Dash shift

I like both right where they are.

Shifter is small and out of the way.

Speedometer is very easy to read in peripheral vision, but not obnoxious. I was concerned about going digital as I've never had that before and being distracted by the changing numbers, but it's not been a problem at all. At night, I keep it pretty dim, but still easy to read. That it's not centered to the driver is of no concern to me at all. Instrumentation does not have to be symetrical, it needs to be highly functional and easy and comfortable to read.

 

I've always liked digital dash. This is the first car that I have had digital dash on and am very pleased. The location is very good because you don't have to glance down very far. On top of that itis the closest thing to heads up display that Buick has put on some cars. I drove a company owned LeSabre a couple years back that had the HUD and I got real used to it real fast.

I have always prefered a collumn shift over a floor shift. I like haveing room on the floor and not having a shift lever coming through, so the joystick through the dash is really nice. But to each his own on their desires and tollerances.

 

The speedo/cluster placement was probably *designed* for people
developing presbyopia.

I haven't had my Prius very long and am still reaching towards my knee to shift when I first start out.. but I like the shifter where it is. I like the location of the speedometer only b/c I don't have to glance too far away to check my speed.
I think you'll get used to it

My first car after getting my license was a Corvair with the dash shifter, so the Prius feel quite natural to me B)

having driven clock-type speedos since the late '50s i was concerned that i'd have trouble even converting to the digital in the '04.

after a while, i found that i adapted just fine. i wish the cruise control worked in 0.5 mph increments instead of 1-mph jumps, sometimes, but now the digital meter is fine.

i also grew to love that i can see it while looking "straight ahead" without having to move my gaze as far from the forward "down the highway" line of sight. i think that's a safety measure and wish more cars did that.

and i think it's really neat that the speedo works in reverse, too. try that with your regular car!
