For a couple of days I've been struggling with the nav system on my Prime Advanced. I want to enter a destination city or town and state, either verbally or with the touch screen. I don't want to have to enter the street address. For example, I just want to say "navigation - Pittsburgh PA." and simply go.

I played with the system for about an hour and checked the manual with no success.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Pick a place; any place.
    City Hall, WalMart...........

One of my many GPS units has an option for "city center" but I don't think it is the Prius.

On my advanced, select Point of Interest; Category; Near city center in California (I assume yours will say your state - don't know what to do if another state) and enter city; ok; POI category Service & Community; City Center; then the city. Involved, but sets destination to city center.

I tried that and nav system gave me an error message that the address does not exist. At that point, I gave up on the horrible system, grabbed my phone and was on my way in 15 seconds with Google maps.

I was hoping the nav system in a Prime Advanced was improved over the nearly unusable system in the 2013 Prius v I traded. The car is much better but the nav still leaves a lot to be desired.

For about 500 miles on a trip from PA to FL, I ran the Toyota nav and Google maps side by side. As I approached a traffic jam on I77. Google routed me around the problem. The Toyota nav "knew" there was a traffic jam but insisted that I make a U turn to get back on the interstate and right back into the jam that Google maps was routing me around.

In summary, the Toyota nav is still not competitive with Google maps. Not even close. If only Toyota would offer Android Auto.

I have to agree about the alternate routing problem.

About 3-4 months ago, I was on a two-lane headed home when the navigation system reported a traffic problem ahead and there was a backup, at least 2-3 miles long as I approached the accident intersection. So I did a U-turn and took a right turn into an area where I knew there were a network of secondary roads. Dang if it didn't try to direct me back to the traffic backup road. So I just used the navigation map and took wrong turns until is directed me to the other side of the traffic jam.

Regardless, I didn't buy a navigation system but an otherwise excellent car. A used Garmin is quite affordable and I understand one also has a dash cam capability. My iPhone also has a good mapping capability.

I find the one in my '17 C to be 1000% better than the '13 was.

I don't know about "alternate routing" because you have to be careful with that .
IF the problem has existed for a while before you get there, the "detour" often can be worse than just sticking it out.

Except in Florida, where they close the Interstate in both directions for two hours.......to investigate a flat tire.

It would help me if it would show where the traffic issue is, rather than just saying 20 miles ahead on your route there is traffic. Am I missing something?

Another beef I have is with the duration of the on screen message. I am forever trying to read the message, while driving in highway traffic, only to see the message go away before I finish reading it. I have looked for a way to change this duration, but don't think it is possible. Does anyone have a suggestion?

True story and/or the Garmin as well. I use my 7" Garmin Nuvi 2797 for daily and long distance routing trips and can easily move it between vehicles plus free quarterly lifetime map updates and then I use Google maps on my S6 for traffic alerts if needed. It's sad that the Toyota maps are the same Navteq database as the Garmin but the POI's are watered down and the routing is weaker on the Toyota plus it's nearly a year behind when it comes out annually each fall. You can buy a new Garmin with lifetime updates for what a single Toyota SD card map update costs.

In dash nav has trailed in features from the very beginning as compared to the portable units and it really has not caught up much. It works well enough for point A to point B and finding some local POI's but I'd never "rely" on it to get me through a mega waypoint 2,000 trip. My Garmin has many, many times and expertly so. It just works.

Yes, I look at the Toyota Nav for reference, but I don't primarily rely on it when it counts in places I've never been.

It will be interesting to see what your opinion is of the NAV in your new car when you get it.
Things have improved a LOT in the last 7 years......including the ability to easily update the map data (but I haven't asked what the cost is yet).

In older cities where they have built new Post Office buildings in the last 20 years or so......those are often located AWAY from the downtown area.

There should be a "button" to pull up the actual traffic data.
I would think that would show the location and severity on an actual map.
My others do that.......but I haven't tried my new C yet.
I have seen the button though. I think it was under "Apps".

The annual only updates are very expensive compared to hand held devices. $150 -169.

Our 2014 4Runner and our 2014 Camry Hybrid essentially have the exact same nav as this 2017. The Prime just has a different size screen, but the actual map operation is the same. The dealer only has Primes that were ordered and already sold, so there are no test drives, but I sat in a 2017 Prime advanced running in park for an hour and the "get me from here to there" part of the nav is exactly like my 4Runner. My 4runner has a more recent map update (by me) than the new just delivered 2017 Prime I sat in had. Toyota map updates come out in the fall each year.

Toyota is finally getting smart and is standardizing the map update SD card versions to all use the same part number.

    The newest version so far:

The internal date on the card is 2016-05-1!
The version number is 86271 oe184
    Map Ver 05-36-21 2016-05-1

On my 2014 4Runner Trail Edition Pro, when I powered up after insertion it also updated my Entune Audio software from 0101D1 to 0101D4 from the card.

It makes sense that they are getting away from the vehicle specific part numbers and including audio software updates helps them in the long run. (This is the same updates you can do via your phone and Entune app and not the dealer only installed firmware updates.)

The word "only" in that statement confuses me a bit; what does that mean ?
Just because they are issued annually doesn't mean that you have to get each one.
Every 2 or 3 years should be plenty for most people.

My Prime advanced was built in 04/17; sold May 26,2017; and says the Map Ver is 05 36 53 2016 10-3. This seems to me a later version than you referenced as the newest version.

Did you find the map ver# by removing the card and reading it on a computer?

No, I selected Options from the big screen, then one of the selections which I think said map data.

Then that's a very good thing. I stand corrected. I suspect the tiny part number on the outside of your SD card is different then the 86271 oe184 that I saw. I know they just began standardizing the map update part numbers in the last 18 months. It's possible that not all Toyota vehicle are using the same one yet.
