I am new to PriusChat and I use the name marjam because it is part of my initials and my email address. Should I change my name? What is all this "marjam" stuff? I'm a sensitive guy!

Don't worry, it is just a bad trick someone created that has well run its course.

You can add a certain phrase to your post that automatically adds the readers name...making them think you are talking to them.

Next time you see one of them, hit reply on their post and read what they actually typed...you will see your name is replaced by this phrase.

Now, ghostofjk, it is not nice to tease...you have to learn to play with others nicely :D

Bulletin Board Code "tags" allow certain kinds of controls to be transmitted as plain text. For example "b" surrounded by square brackets initiates the "bold" instruction, and "/b" surrounded by square brackets ends the bold segment. You will see the actual instructions if you click on the "Reply" button of a post that uses any BB Code.

One such BB Code instruction causes the tag to be replaced by the user name of the person reading the post. You will see your own name, I'll see mine, Joe Smith will see his, etc. All reading exactly the same post. It's a simple programming trick, and Danny has shown that he is a very clever and skilled programmer.

It is an infantile joke that Danny (the owner of this site) finds amusing and harmless, while some of us find it offensive, and most new users are utterly confused by.

Come on, Danny! Kill the "YOU" tag!!!!!!!!!

I really am just joking around and don't care one way or the other but how does "marjam" fit in to this?

"[you]" doesn't seem to get it still. Yes, we talk about you in a lot of threads. In fact, [you], is Prius Chatter of the Year in another thread. We knew of your arrival before you did. The old form feed manuscript that came from the ancient Roland Dot Matrix foretold of your coming in 1986.

    All hail, [you]!!

Take our virgins and be satisfied and not unleash your fury upon us simple folk!

Well, this is far beyond my humble ability to comprehend. I guess [marjam] is the code for eveyone's name. I will accept the challenge but have to forgo the virgins (wife said no). I will not take threats to kill marjam seriously as I love PriusChat and plan to continue reading.

    Sincerely,

    [marjam]

Since "marjam" is your name on this forum, you see posts with the [ you] tag as saying "marjam", where I would see them as saying "Jeannie". I joined in April, and a few days later I saw a post that said "Jeannie" was named Prius Chatter of the Year - I probably had posted 3 messages at that point. I started to read that thread and there were posts from a lot of other new people asking if they had done something wrong in choosing their user name in the forum, because they had never even posted a single message.

BTW, I like your user name - it reminds me of the herb marjoram, which I love on broiled tomatos - the song should be titled "Parsley Marjoram, Rosemary and Thyme", because sage reminds me of heavy Thanksgiving dinners or breakfast sausage, and broiled tomatos are a sweet summery treat

the code you are reading is the "you" tag. when properly formatted with this command, the "you" is replaced by the user name of the person reading the post.

Marjam... only YOU see your name. no one else. everyone else sees their own name and only their own name.

look at this as your initiation. like any other initiation, its only effective to the uninformed. proper dedication to PriusChat would never have allowed you to fall victim to this college fraternity prank.

It is nice that someone likes my user name. As a musician maybe I can write a new song with the lyrics you mentioned.

I now see that whenever we see our user name everyone else sees their OWN user name. It is a joke that some PriusChat members like and some don't. I plan to ignore it and use the forums for their intended purpose; ;) to discuss a wonderful car.

that is the point... it is a joke. an inside joke that veterans know and ignore. now that you have enough experience on Priuschat you are a veteran with "inside knowledge"

although Priuschat welcomes everyone, we have to have some way of separating the chaff from the wheat so to speak. our failure to scare you off only shows that you are a motivated Prius owner or one with a real interest in getting to know more about the most advanced car on the road today

Since marjam had a smiley at the top of his original post, I wrongly assumed he knew how [you] worked, and was just playing ("I'm a sensitive guy!").

I assume Danny, if he's read of the confusion on the part of some of these newbies, will see that the joke is doing more harm than good and turn it off.

I now understand everything and I am one of "you guys". But I do think that it is silly and should be shut off. Too many people think (as I did) that they have done something wrong. I don't care if it remains though, I'm not that sensitive

The "other" prius chat forum I looked at seemed to be made up of much more aggressive and negative people. Let's not become like that!

BTW, is there anyway to get the spell checker (yes, I do that) to accept the word "Prius"?

Yup the spellchocker can add wirds. Just click the learn button when it finds "Prius" as an incorrect spelling. Of course, myslf, I have perfekt spelling, and have no need for one ;)

Of course the "you" tag is a joke. But it's a stupid, irritating, and infantile joke. Danny thinks it's a fine joke, and harmless, and has replied to requests that it be turned off by saying as much. I know one intelligent person, who would have had much to contribute to this board, who was driven off by personal attacks after he presented his views on the "you" tag, and has decided that this board is not worth the anguish.

Probably most people will not decide whether or not to get involved here, one way or the other, based on the "you" tag. But we'll lose a few serious participants, and we'll attract a few frivolous ones, by the incorporation of a useless, stupid, and annoying joke that has served any humorous purpose it may once have had and has turned into a chunk of rotten flesh, stinking up the board, and forcing everyone to hold their nose if they wish to continue participating.

It's irritating and very confusing when you're new to the forum. It's hardly the way to "greet" new members. As wonderful and as helpful as this forum and its members have been, I just don't understand why anyone - especially someone responsible for this forum's very existence - would want to subject people here to this so-called joke. A joke is funny - the "you" tag ain't no joke.

Danny is devoted to promoting hybrid technology, and he's an inspired programmer. But he's also very young. This thing has caught his funny bone, and like most young people, he cannot see the damage his "harmless" joke is doing, or the way it's hurting the feelings of newbies.

I think there's actually an active poll on the "you" tag, but since the "you" tag is employed in the poll (at least, in the subject line), I haven't voted in the poll. I don't open/read any threads with the "you" tag ... and if it were disabled, I wouldn't encounter them in individual messages, either.

Hopefully nothing really important will be posted with the "you" tag - I'm sure I'm not the only one here who won't read it.
