Is this true of Pulse and Glide?

    I just had my 2013 for a month so I'm still learning. I've used cruise vs me, and mpg seems to go up more/quicker with cruise, 72-74 mpg on a 65 mph interstate (I-40 and 85 in NC).

    This article was about a Gen 2 but I would imagine Gen 3 as well.

    Also is putting in and out of N harmful? I've done that a few times and don't feel any jerking or anything odd.

    Gen II was easier for me to hypermile than Gen III

    in any event the Prius has no "gears"
    Neutral just unclutches so nothing serious can happen in N

    I still don't see why going to Neutral would help much except on a long downhill stretch on a hwy. Even then if its steep enough, the car shuts the engine off anyway. Same coming off off-ramps.

    In town, same for slowing down. If I'm under 45, I can keep it in EV Mode with the pedal.

    Last tank I got 43.5 mpg my keeping it in EV with the pedal when I can, mostly Eco Mode, letting off as I approach the top of a hill before going down, and using cruise more on I-40.

    Also hitting the EV button in parking lots, apts (Uber/Lyft pickups).

    With it 93-98 degrees here every day lately I suppose 43.5 is fairly good. I have noticed #s go up more at night when its cooler or after rain.

    Neutral does nothing mechanical - there are no clutches to 'unclutch".

    It just informs the hybrid control system to not provide or consume power to/from MG1 or MG2, i.e no charging battery, no starting the engine if it is stopped, no preventing overspeed if you speed up going down hill.

    There is a slight risk of MG1 overspeed if you put it in neutral with the engine stopped and then gain speed down a hill.

    I've never seen 70+ MPG US for a true average over a long stretch on a 70 MPH interstate even with flat terrain and no traffic. My last such run average mostly cruise was a bit over 44. The instantaneous MPG would vary from the low 20s to the gas-shut off 99.9. But I've never seen a heavy v wagon get in the 70s on average at 65+. And especially if you are really doing 70 as above 55 I see a real difference every 5 MPH.

    glide, or neutral, neither uses nor regenerates electricity. both of which are inefficient. so the difference in efficiency is where you see mpg gains.

    toyota has added an automatic 'true glide' feature to the 2018 hycam. they finally figured out what we've been doing manually over the last 17 years. it helped them attain the 50mpg era number.

    i guess they do read priuschat.:cool:
