We are seeing 45mpg on today's 150 miles. It's been around 38-41 this past month.

This week should show a more solid set of figures to judge by.

    Update:

No surging at all. I suspect wife did not add oil when she said she would (got busy.. as in late for work) and the car got upset at low oil.

The Prius takes 1 quart of oil between markes on the dip stick and the last time I had checked it it was half way down. When the alarms went off last week, wife added 1 quart of oil without asking me what to do... :) so she knew it was going to be low. After she added the quart of oil it was still a quarter of an inch below full when I checked it the next day.

So it seems to be using a little oil each day as I have checked it every night after between 2 or 3 hundred miles. Not as bad as first thought.

The car is due for 5k oil change on Sat and will keep closer eye on the consumption.

Not quite, it takes 1.6 qts between marks.
Given this, the oil was still above the bottom mark, so low oil is not the cause of the surging problems. When you read of people having problems it is not low oil but NO oil as they never checked their oil at all and had let it get the point where it took 2 qts just to get it to the bottom of the dipstick.

You need to be looking elsewhere to explain your surging problem.

Hmmm ok I must have miss read the part where it was only 1 quart (1.06 Lt) between marks.

Time will tell if it gets upset again with the oil kept up to the full mark. :)

Wife loves her 2008 Prius (owned from new) and dreads doing anything that may harm it.

So this morning (on a day of the oil change) she asks me to top off the oil just in case. It's now passed a week without getting upset and setting off alarms and I've added 400 ml of oil for about 1,100 miles.

Not looking as bad as I first thought.

~ 1qt/2k miles, a little more than ideal, but not horrible.

Update: After a few weeks on no issues and the battery reporting operating temp of between 100f and 126f no matter how hot it was out side the car had a return of the surging/lack of power. Batter still in the blue. I took the VVT valve out again and gave it a clean and the car drove just fine for 2 more weeks. The air cleaner was not on super tight last time so I double checked all of that.

So it's not the battery heat as that seems ok. Maybe it's time to change the VVT valve and see.

Or load test the HV battery cells and see if some are getting close to the dead zone.

And the oil consumption slowed for the first 3,000 miles to just a tiny add every 500 miles but as we close in on 5,000 miles it started using a little more each day. So moving oil changes back to 4,000 miles to be safe. (car has 217,000 miles now)
