Seeking your help with our 2008 Toyota Prius.

Our smart keys stopped working a few weeks ago. They do everything they are supposed to (lock, unlock, etc.), but they no longer are auto unlocking and start the car by simply being on you. Help!

Secondly, my wife was driving the Prius yesterday and called me. She said the car was driving fine, but there was no display. She had no idea how fast she was going - nothing was showing up on the dash. When she pulled over, the trunk was locked and unable to be unlocked. She restarted the car, and the lights came on and the trunk unlocked, but it's got me scratching my head as to what may have caused this and if it is somehow related to our smart key not working either?

Any thoughts on how to get our smart keys working properly again, or what may have caused the display outage, are greatly appreciated!

First, check your 12v battery with a good meter at the battery or the battery access point in the fuse box on top of wheel well driver side. Do this first thing in the morning after the car has sat overnight. It should read somewhere on the green zone in the chart below, with the car in ready the reading should be between 13-14.4v, indicating the battery is being charged.

The dash display is called the combo meter. Did she have a hard time turning the car off when the combo meter was out? When the meter is out you have to push the on/off button for 3+sec to get it to turn off. The combo meter going dark means that the meter is going bad. You could have a component going bad or a bad solder joint. This will likely happen randomly until it goes solidly dark. Online you can get a refurb unit for around $150 for diy. The dealership for much more, I'm not sure if they new or refurb.

Thank you for your response! I do not have a meter for the battery, so I will take it over to Autozone, and see what they see.

She said the car shut-off as normal; she doesn't remember having to push and hold it for three seconds.

I received more information though; the cruise will not set either. When you push the cruise button in, it blinks three times in the display but does not stay solid. So it does not allow you to set. So I've got smart keys not working properly, a cruise that doesn't work, and a display that shut-off, but is now working normal again.
